This was years ago, but a CBP officer once asked if I was a Democrat. (I think he was making conversation and probably didn’t realize how inappropriate that question was.).
But the point is, that it isn’t like CBP officers in general have any sense of shame.
I would presume they would make a guess based on name and appearance and ask, “What is your country of birth?” But I dunno. The reports seemed credible to me though and I thought they were worth passing on. I used the phrase “ethnic Iranians” to emphasize that the people they’re harassing are reported to be American citizens.
Pretend you are a hawk advising Trump. Also pretend that you don’t want to start a war that would result in regime change and a new pro-US government that will spread democracy and freedom to the region. That should narrow it down because most of these clowns still believe that wouild happen after we won a war.
This may be true, but I’m not 100% convinced that it is.
Any specific reason to believe that Iraq’s armed forces*, with support from Iran and Russia and whoever else is happy to help, couldn’t keep ISIS down from here on out even if the Americans leave?
Which, unlike in ISIS’ heyday, now includes the PMF’s / PMU’s.
My US passport has my place of birth on it, so any naturalized Iranian-Americans would be easy to spot. It shows my nationality (USA) and place of birth (NY, USA). Americans of Iranian descent born in the US would be trickier to discriminate against, I guess.
I’ve wondered about that. Our primary goal in defeating ISIS is to prevent terrorist attacks on US citizens. Isn’t it? If ISIS controls territory in Syria or anywhere, does that make those attacks more likely? I don’t see how, if they want to train terrorists, they can train them anywhere. If we defeat them entirely another group by another name is just going to arise eventually.
First, throwing the Kurds to the Turks was a huge mistake on many levels.
But, the US is still continuing its assistance to the Kurds. The main difference is that the relationship with the Kurds has been irrevocably damaged. Sort of like someone finds their spouse cheating on them, but decide to stay together for the kid’s sake. That’s where we stand today. If the US leaves Iraq, there’s not really a clear manner to continue providing the support to Kurds. The US presence in Iraq has been central to what we have been doing for the last several years.
It’s not the size of their navy; it’s what they can do with what they have.
Shut down the Straight of Hormuz for a few weeks, and the global economy would go into a tailspin. And from Iran’s perspective, what would they have to lose? Their regime is already being threatened with extinction. They haven’t done it yet most likely because they know it would be provocative and until now, they would have angered even those who are sympathetic to their situation (China, et al). But if they ever get to the point where they’re desperate, that’s on the table. They could mine the shit out of the Straight.
I hope you don’t think the ships pictured in that link are Iranian. The article you linked to was about the potential for Iran to deploy mines that the U.S minesweepers would have to deal with. Iran has no carriers, and no capital ships at all.
Iran does have a reasonable navy for a regional power. It is building a destroyer, and has a few corvettes, four 50-year old frigates, a handful of diesel-electric submarines, three or four fast attack boats with anti-ship missiles, and a bunch of small speedboat-sized attack boats. It also has a number of support ships.
None of these, with the possible exception of a submarine or two, would survive more than a few hours if the U.S decided to eliminate them.
THAT part of our actions, are utterly disgraceful.
BOOM. And there’s the truth. The US Navy is the single most powerful projector of force we have, and we have a LOT of Navy. The rest of the nations of the planet COMBINED cannot defeat it.
Falsely. Thanks. I already knew about their little limpet mine distributing fast boats that are part of the reason Iran finds itself here. Let’s not forget: THEY did this to themselves. This is the most brazen and outrageous answer to their brazen sabre rattling and lower level operations they’ve been conducting for DECADES. Fuck them.
Why do you think CBP cannot take some canonical list of Persian surnames and detain/delay people based on that? They are mostly unaccountable and unanswerable for how they choose to harass people.
If your answer is that surnames aren’t an adequate way to screen for nationality, I’m sorry, you’ll have to come up with a better reason, because the CBP is not bound by that kind of logic.
