Don’t think Trump would leave this easily. On the other hand Reagan cut and ran in Lebanon after the marine barracks were bombed.
Iran’s rational.
Possibly, in comparison with the Dotard in Chief, but they are undergoing extreme pressure to do something and, if they wish to remain in power, will have to do something.
I mean, look, their official newspaper released this ad with the slogan “Severe Revenge”. Is this ‘rational’ or ‘emotionally inflammatory’? I know which I would choose…
https://twitter.com/IranNewspaper/status/1214043509247877120?
the reporter who tweeted the letter said it’s badly written and they are just moving troops within Iraq.
So, the Brigadier General who wrote it can’t write for shit? That’s the story the admin is now pushing, after the “It was a draft” and “it’s not true” stories fell apart within the same hour?
Always remember: This is the same administration which took a sharpie to a weather map, then forced scientists to develop post hoc rationalizations and press releases as to why that was OK.
Nitpick: the word he used was חיסול (“Elimination” or “Taking Out”) and not התנקשות (“Assassination”). It’s the word Israel use whenever it kills its enemies, be they regular soldiers or terrorists. It’s standard military talk.
I’d say that’s more than a nitpick; that’s probably a diplomatically significant distinction. Thanks for sharing.
(this is why I love the SD!)
Certainly true. Doesn’t make them irrational, though.
“Doing something” would be rational, seeing how, under the present circumstances, it’s necessary in order to maintain credibility.
Decades ago, the Japanese in response to American sanctions among other reasons, decided to embark on a conquest of Asia. However, they needed the USA out of the war. For some reason, the Imperial Japanese govt got it into their heads, that the anti war and isolationist parties wanted no part of a conflict in the east. They were given a frank and open briefing by the architect of the raid on Pearl Harbor that unlike the information that they had gleaned, they were going to awaken the Giant. The rest is history and obviously its being repeated.
Iran does have options, but none of them are good ones and your post was picked at random due the hysterical sounding nature and posting the sales brochure for some of china’s latest military tech and potential options for that tech. They are not going to do anything that puts them in conflict with the US, the dude that was killed was equivalent to Pence and they have yet to do anything. Iran is contained, and now its time to start on roll back and then regime change.
Look, you go to war with the lying, incompetent boobs you have, not the lying incompetent boobs you want.
I still can’t believe how obvious Pence’s lie was trying to link Soleimani to 9/11. Not that you can trust anything, anything at all, that comes out of this administrations pie hole, but at least have some plausible deniability. Their “imminent attack” lie was at least harder to debunk.
Incorrect.
The Iraqi vote to expel the Americans was step one.
People who lie as much as these assholes do actually have trouble distinguishing truth from falsehood.
Lies ARE truth.
It should be noted that the US of nowadays is different from that of 1941. Our president is an ignorant coward bent on saving his own skin, his best advisers are jumping off his sinking ship, many of his senior administration posts are staffed with unconfirmed temps, our military is war-weary after 18 years of continuous conflict, our public has no appetite for another mideastern adventure. Our alliances are eroding thanks to Trump’s feckless negligence and provocation. US influence and prestige have been squandered.
The US military is comparatively strong, but the US as an entity is no giant. It’s more like a 500-pound cranky toddler that should have taken a nap 2 hours ago.
The thing which happened with the letter today is pretty simple:
-
You have military people following the book. “The book” likely said, in so many words, to obey the laws and withdraw peacefully, ala our withdrawal from France in '67.
-
Their civilian bosses are people following Trump.
-
And Trump doesn’t care for the military book.
So this brigadier general does his job, his civilian bosses have no idea what his job is, and now they’re panicking because Dotard is all pissed that his military is responding as it is supposed to.
I agree with jsc, that ain’t a nitpick and a perfect example of why I’m less of a fan of JohnT’s breathless hot takes on various twitter feeds than some in here.
Is this taking out of Soleimani close enough to shooting someone on 5th Avenue that we can finally test the claim?
No, because if that’s true every American President has shot someone on 5th Avenue. I hate to be the one to break it to you but Obama murdered plenty of people with drone strikes. In fact, he ordered the killing of an American citizen unlike Trump. But I’m sure there’s a way to hand wave all that.
Nah, it happened in one of those shithole countries, so it doesn’t count.
Which is probably how they think about it at the White House.
That’s clearly how they felt in the Obama White House.
