for the Niger documents? The US and Britain knew about it. Where is it in the UN charter that specifically states the the CIA, FBI or MI-5 are to do any of that to a document independently submitted to the UN? Its not enuf that the US is the de facto albeit unappreciated Police for the entire world, now the CIA has to be the World’s intelligence service as well?? **

You are assuming that a smoking gun critical to building a case for war passed on to the President to reference in his frickin’ globally televised speech wasn’t vetted?

If it was vetted, then it points to gross incompetence or a hidden agenda. If it was not vetted, then unsubstantiated rumors are driving a war. Either way, this is very bad.

I really hope this was all just a ploy to put pressure on Saddam (I secretly think that this could possibly be the case. Since it’s a ploy, we can’t actualy let the world know that it really is a ploy, so we have to make it as realistic as possible. Since the ploy is actually getting some results, we have to keep stepping up the ploy. If we didn’t, it would be recognized as the ploy that it is.) (Boy I just typed ‘ploy’ alot)

If it’s a ploy, the administration has grossly overplayed its hand. A common mistake among novice poker-playing cowboys.

elucidator: Can’t think who that might be. Someone with a very active, very sophisticated intelligence operation. That America would regard as credible, without too much examination. Someone who would find a war between America and Iraq desireable, especially if it meant a long-standing American military presence in the Middle East.

If you’re insinuating that Israel had a hand in this, I think that’s a little irresponsible. There’s lots of room for debate about Israel’s policies, but in the absence of evidence I think you should keep paranoid delusions like this to yourself.

elucidator: Don’t count on it. My own personal favorite whopper, Bush flaunting the Report That Never Existed, never got explained either. They simply removed it from their talking points and kept on going as if nothing had ever happened. Down the memory hole and poof! gone.

Now this I’m with you on. However, unless I’m overestimating the American people - and the American media - the administration will only get away with this so many times. They’re very close to spending the last of their “rally 'round the flag in times of crisis” support. Unfortunately, it probably won’t be in time to avoid a war.
