But if she runs as the Trumpist alternative to McCarthy, she may lose the few remaining “moderate” members of the Republican caucus. With no Democrats willing to vote for either of them, it’s likely no one can get a majority. As for Ryan, he was all but forced into the role when McCarthy couldn’t get enough Republicans to back him. He didn’t want it, but he was the only member who was broadly acceptable to the entire caucus. My money’s on McCarthy eventually being able to pull it off, but if not, I’d predict that Steve Scalise gets the gavel. ---
