This. I’ve never known mine, and I haven’t yet seen a reason why I should care. And unlike some other responders, I haven’t learned mine “without even trying” since I have never had occasion to write a letter to myself. (For the same reason, it takes me forever to learn my own phone number – I never call myself.) And I’ve never known of any reason why I should use my own zip+4 address when I write my return address on an envelope. It’s not like a lot of snail-mail I send is expected to get returned to me.
The only people who seem to know or care about my zip+4 are those (all businesses) that mail to me. I’ve never given them my zip+4 (because I don’t even know it), but they all find out somehow. I conclude, therefore, that it’s redundant, and either that or some other part of my address could just as well be omitted.
As said above, it’s optional, mainly the benefit is for sorting the mail before delivery. As far as how they get it, I know you can look it up on the USPS website (enter a street address, and it will give you the ZIP+4, very handy if you can remember someone’s house number but not their zip code.)
Weird. Don’t know it for my current condo/apartment, but I’ve always tended to know it.
Can I get extra credit for knowing my current and past library numbers and two credit card numbers?
Feeling like a slacker. Feeling like a snacker, actually, but some construction crew broke a water line, so instead of making rice or even hydrating properly, I’m going to have to shlep up the hill, buy some water, and maybe some bread or a sandwich or something. Sucks cause I have to be awake by 4:30am PST tomorrow.
