This thread is to discuss the results of today’s midterm elections as they are announced and things related to it like turnout, polling and what’s happening at polling places. This is not for political debates about the candidates or other major issues.

Thanks for starting this. I probably won’t post again until late this evening, because I’ll be out from ~7ET to about ~11ET, but I’ll (hopefully) enjoy catching up.

Looking at party only, registered Republicans have a large plurality in early voting in Florida despite 7% more of the Democrats voting percentagewise. And to make things worse, some of those missing Republicans will vote on election day, furthering the gap, and NPA voters broke Republican last time around too. In order to counteract this, NPAs will have to severely break for the Democrats (along with some Republicans as well.)

I made a Costco run this morning and bought a 5-pack of 187ml bottles of Stella semi-sparkling wine in case things go well and a handle of Bulleit in case they do not.

From the Ettengermentum Chat, I offer, but do not necessarily recommend, the Senate Drinking Game:

Shot for D loss in GA, MN or NH

Shot for loss, beer for win: ME, MI, OH, TX, AK

Beer for win in any other State

My friend invited me to a watch party in Akron with the woman running for our House Rep, Emilia Sykes. I think she has an extremely good chance of winning (D district, incumbent, does a great job) so that will be a good party but I’m afraid of all the other outcomes.

I just wanna curl up under a blanket at home. So I will.

What are some good online resources with with to follow the goings-on of the day/evening in detail. . .breaking news related to the election, and later, vote counts? I’m not usually a live media person.

My understanding is that if you download the NY Times app, you can read their coverage tonight only for free. Otherwise, the Guardian will have a good live blog.

Or if you want to go super nerdy, you could subscribe to Nate Silver’s Substack for access to the liveblog with this superstar lineup:

> Hosting rotates between **Nate Silver, Jerusalem Demsas, Lakshya Jain, Galen Druke, and Matt Yglesias**. Guests include **Dave Weigel, Eli McKown-Dawson, Larry Sabato, Sean Trende, Clare Malone, Greg Bluestein, Lenny Bronner, Nathaniel Rakich, Kelsey Piper, Jeremiah Johnson** , and more.

I anticipate this thread will probably be quite active as well!

Another is SC: Graham (R) vs Andrews (D), although it’s likely to go R. The results should be in early and if Andrews wins, you can break out the champagne.

What to expect this evening:

6 pm ET (less than two hours!) polls close in Kentucky. The only competitive race there is in the 6th Congressional District, which Nate Silver actually has as the closest race in the entire country. And Kentucky counts fast, so this could be the first meaningful data point of the night.

7 pm: polls close in South Carolina, which also counts fast and which is considered a longshot possible Dem pickup. A win here would pretty much mean the celebration can begin.

7:30 : Ohio and North Carolina close, both count pretty quickly.

8 pm: Florida closes. They count quickly, so anything other than a quick call for the GOP would be a good sign nationally. Also Maine, but they probably won’t have results until tomorrow.

9 pm: TX, IA and KS close, and count quickly. MI, MN and NE close, but do not count quickly.

Midnight: Polls close in Alaska, and most of the vote gets counted quickly, but if it’s a close race it could be a couple weeks before the sled dogs bring in all the ballots from remote areas.

Both CNN and MSNBC are saying that at the top of the hour (six minutes from now) they’ll be reporting “First Voter Polls”.

Not sure what that means, or how that differs from the numbers we’ve been getting for weeks now.
