Nothing to add, expect that I appended my sig way back in what I think was the first Pitting of this dumb practice.

Hardly ever use it but this seems as good a time as ever…

In my case, when I moved from Usenet to internet boards, I did it for quite awhile.
On Usenet, if you don’t sign your name, all anyone has to go on is your email
address, which in many cases might have been quite abbreviated/cryptic, or not
related to your Usenet persona. Thus if your email is “[XYZ202@yahoo.com](mailto:XYZ202@yahoo.com)”, or even
“[johndifoolNOSPAM@dell.com](mailto:johndifoolNOSPAM@dell.com)”, you’d write your full name, with caps and spaces, as
a courtesy to other posters.

This is also why I used hard returns when I first came on here, as again on Usenet if
you didn’t use hard returns the text would go on forever to the right on a single line
(at least on some mail readers). Oops I did it again…

Funny how commonly accepted memes and traditions in one place on the 'net become
completely foreign and deserving of ridicule in others.

Well, yeah. I like to think it’s basic intelligence to be able to recognize different contexts and adjust your communication based on it. Someone saying “over” into the phone after everything they say is being ridiculous, while it had/has a clear and useful purpose in radio communication. Abbreviations for words and common phrases have significant value in fast-paced games and text messaging because time to type is at a premium, while there’s no excuse for it on a message board.

Signing off a Usenet post with your name was useful and polite, while it’s just not necessary on a message board because the name’s right there. It’s as much an affectation as saying “over” on the phone. It doesn’t _harm_ anyone, but it is silly.

**John DiFool** , it’s not funny at all–it makes perfect sense. You inserted your own line breaks and signatures because Usenet didn’t do it for you. However, every message board on the face on the Internet has been able to (a) wrap text and (b) mark posts by users’ chosen names for nigh on a billion years now, so it’s redundant and annoying to continue to do so.

The problem comes from trying to wedge the standards from one form of communication into another. To lift an example from an earlier thread on the subject that I browsed a bit, it’s like ending every sentence on the phone with “over.” I’d imagine most people here would find \*that \*very annoying, as well.

Well, hopefully it’s pissing \*\*thirdwarning \*\*off, in which case it’s working out quite well, thanks for inquiring.

ETA: Damn, **Bosstone** , you posted as I was in the middle of composing!

>
> Also, how do you make yourself \*\*not \*\*read the header? Don’t you just kind of absorb the text as you skim by it on the way from the previous post?

There are really only three types of people that make a distinct impression on me, there are the mafia player who I interact with on a daily basis, even then I get them confused. There are the people who make an impression on me enough to remember, Shodan being one or other people who repeatedly make me go “huh, I wonder who said that”. The third group are the people who I’ve interacted with in a personal way either through PMs or at Dopefests. The rest are just a collective mass of Dopers.

To be fair I don’t pay attention to people in real life very well either so it takes multiple times meeting some one unless they do something memorable for me to care that I’ve met them before. I think what’s being said is more important then who is saying it.

But I could only name a handful of users that stick in my head due to their sign offs, S^G and Yamms are the first two that jump to mind. So even signing a post doesn’t guarantee I’ll remember you, if you even care slightly about an anonymous guy on a message board recognizing you.

Oh, man- thanks for introducing me to that plugin. Yes, it’s childish to replace “Regards” with “I’m a putz”, but so is signing every damn post.

Multiline substitutions can be done with the regular expression feature. Open the FoxReplace screen and look to the left of the “Replace” field and you’ll see a drop down list with a “T - Text”, “W - Whole words”, and “RE - Regular Expressions” options. Select “RE” and include the tag vBulletin puts in at the end of each line(a \<br\> tag) followed by the newline and then the beginning of the next section of text you want to replace.

For example,
Some Word(s),\<br\>
Poster’s Name

Then in the “With” field, you can either leave it blank or put whatever you want. If you want to replace the multi-line sign off with a multi-line replacement, use the \<br\> tag wherever you want a newline.

For example,
New Sign off\<br\>Pseudonym

Check the “HTML” checkbox down at the bottom of the page. Also, be aware there is a bug(or more likely a limitation) where it won’t re-render the page after Javascript substitutions have been made, so any AJAX enabled pages won’t be affected. Other pages may render differently and you’ll need to view the page source to discover what tags may have been added to the text you want to modify.

Enjoy,
Steven

I have chosen, “You do know I’m an idiot, right?” to replace the “Regards.”

You know, I get worked up about some things. I find it extremey annoying that no one seems to figure out that trying to manipulate through armed occupation the doings of the peoples of the Middle East is doomed to failure. I find it very mood-altering in a not so good way that the state of South Carolina cannot manage to fund a decent education for its children, prefering to remain 49th or so among the states in educational results. And I can positively rave about the failure of the US Men’s National Team to utilize a decent scoring forward or offensive midfielder.

Somehow, in the grand scheme of things, getting outraged over an affectation by a minority of posters here seems pretty silly.

With all due affection,

Doug
