These threads definitely bring out the total dickery of certain posters. I like the comparison drawn up-thread to school-age boys who immediately ramp up their annoying behavior on being told how annoying they are. The sign-offs have never been excessively bothersome to me, although ever since **Shodan** revealed in some previous thread that he sometimes uses his sign-off as a way of saying “fuck you,” that’s what I tend to read it as. ---

Why can’t the sign-offs be part of the sig? I don’t think it should be banned out-right, but it should be in the sig, which I’ve handily disabled so I won’t ever have to look at them. It’d be nice if we had the same choice with “regards,” “cheers,” etc. ---

After a thread similar to this one the mods said they would start enforcing it but it lasted 20 minutes because Shodan went into a girly hissy fit and the mods lined up to give him consolation blowjobs. But those words are copyrighted now and I am not allowed to say “Regards Shodan”. OOPS! did that count? ---

Not at all. Certainly one is still free to say “as regards **Shodan** , a moment’s thought is a moment wasted,” or “flushed with desire, **sailor** regards **Shodan** longingly from across the room,” for example. ---

I’ve tuned it out. More specifically, I’ve tuned out the _normal_ ones. Regards, Enjoy, Love, etc… Now, on the other hand, if the poster in question went on a trivial and childish rant complete with name calling, and ended their post with “Regards”, I’d think less of the poster. Doubleplusungood points if you end your post with a word from a dead language. Yes, I’m talking to you, Vox Imperatoris. I highly enjoyed that thread… and its spinoff. ---

I post on another board where people sign off with pictures of themselves, weather/temperature reports & in one bizarre case photos of bridges. Its annoying having to scroll past stuff that you were only interested (maybe) in seeing once. This just seems very minor. ---

If the poster has been advised that a large number of people find the “regards”, “peace”, “love”, “I’m a wanker who thinks this makes me look smart”, or whatever else they insist on adding to each post is annoying, they should be referred to the sig file, where they can say what they want but those who don’t want to see it can disable it. This is a reasonable compromise. Unfortunately, some of these people don’t like to compromise. What’s important is that they want you to see it, not that you don’t want to see it. In real life, this involves raincoats on sunny days and secluded areas of the park, followed by police chases. Online, though, it just requires you to ask yourself if the poster has ever said anything that was worth reading. If so, you put up with their vile habit. If not, a quick addition to the ignore list and you never have to see it again. ---
