> We request that you use headphones, if you have them. If you don’t, while you’re talking we’ll hear your own (slightly delayed) speech as it’s coming through your computer speakers and playing back into the microphone again, and it can get unintelligible quickly if you have the speaker volume cranked.

> We don’t require that you can talk over Vent, but you’re still required to at least listen to it on a raid. The only exception we make in the guild is for our one deaf member. Fortunately he’s so awesome at playing a warlock that he doesn’t need a lot of info, and if I happen to be in the same raid, I usually ‘transcribe’ quickly any pre-attack instructions.

I mute myself as well as my husband (since he’s in the room so I can hear him just fine) so neither of our voices will come through my speakers. My husband does use a headset, however, but that’s because he’s the raid leader so spends more time with his talk button pushed down. There’s probably some echo issues if I happen to hold down my talk button while _he’s_ talking, but I try not to do that. If you don’t play with another person in the room, it’s probably not going to be an issue to just use a microphone.

I recommend getting a decent usb microphone or usb noise-canceling headset. They’re much more reliable and sound better on the other end. Logitech makes some good ones.

There’s a bajillion Ventrilo hosting services out there. The one we use is [Nation Voice](http://www.nationvoice.com/), which we’ve been using for the past 3 years now and have never had any issues. I just pay the fee myself since it’s small change (from my own perspective anyway), so I wouldn’t know anything about the PayPal options.
