Oh, if there’s an official list, that would be hard to fake. I assumed they just published a number. And sent someone to pay respects to the families of the deceased.

:sigh: We don’t homeport ships in San Francisco anymore. Haven’t for decades.

I was living in Alameda in 1997 when they decommissioned the NAS. For me personally it was very selfishly good riddance, because man did I hate “run-up” jet engine testing. Fascinating to watch home values very briefly tank (I didn’t really have the assets or good sense to take advantage back then, mores the pity) then rebound with a fury. But I know a couple people that lost good-paying jobs in that period, mostly related to the Oakland Army Base.

But it was quite the political football in SF Bay Area back in the late 1980’s-late 1990’s. A truly huge and historic military establishment pretty quickly divested to nothing as the Reagan-era military build up was “suddenly” massively downsized (as was appropriate in a very general sense IMHO).

Designing and building a battleship is the very definition of a slow walk. Design on the _Iowa_-class BBs started in 1939. The four that were completed were laid down from September 1940 through January 1942 and mostly took three years from then to commissioning – _Wisconson_ was just over two.

The two that weren’t completed, _Illinois_ and _Kentucky_, were both ordered in September 1940 but work on them started and stopped for a various reasons and the hull work was only partially completed by war’s end. One was broken up on the slipways and the other parted out to repair the other three.

That was during a total war when every resource that could be found went into them. In the 28-odd months they won’t have the ships specs locked down yet, never mind seriously putting pen to paper, or today, stylus to CAD. The money wasted will be minimal compared to fixing his other vanity projects, never mind the billion dollars a day his sinkhole of a war is costing.

It was a cake from mom at home. Since they were photographing V-mail letters onto 16mm microfilm, shipping that, then printing them for delivery makes it sound improbable

Well, not exactly. More like it was a total war when every resource that could be found went into building ships that might actually be useful. And as the war went on they increasingly realized these wouldn’t be, at least not relative to other shipbuilding projects, such as the more than a dozen _Essex_-class carriers they pumped out during the war (give or take, depending on where you set the boundaries for “pumped out” and “during the war”). To say nothing of light carriers, escort carriers, cruisers, destroyers, destroyer escorts, submarines, patrol boats, landing craft, oilers, transports, etc., etc., etc.

That was the real reason the last of the battleships under construction stalled during the war, and then never made it into commission after: there just wasn’t a need for them anymore.

Alas, no. But worry not: there is an Alameda Boulevard that just barely touches on Naval Air Station North Island, _which does_ still act as a homeport to nuclear powered aircraft carriers. So if they ever remake Star Trek IV… they can just film it there and use basically the same line.

Well CVN-80 will be ready around 2031. That will be the third Big “E”.

I still really hate the fact **The Grey Ghost** was chopped up for [scrap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CV-6)#The_end_for_Enterprise). I’m very happy there will be another Enterprise.

She escorted the Hornet on the “[Doolittle Raid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolittle_Raid)”. Sorry if this was mentioned upthread (I can’t read 350 posts,) but what was the original Trump/Navy plan for the _Lincoln_ before the sailors and family members made a huge outcry? Keep the carrier on station near Iran for 400, 500, 600 days without a port call? Forever?

Never announced, we have no idea what the plan was. Trump kept expecting this war he started to end, or at least pretending he expected it. So he couldn’t show weakness by talking about relieving the Lincoln.

But the USS _Theodore Roosevelt_ (CVN-71) is due to deploy from San Diego next month, so the Navy at least probably expected to send the “Big Stick” to relieve the Lincoln.

When Trump was asked about the situation he stated that the sailors weren’t out there nearly long enough. So, clearly, as usual, no plan whatsoever.

Doesn’t a carrier need to fill the hole left when the Washington abandoned the China Sea?

Pulling the goalie to the front line is a desperation move in soccer. It’s not what a winning team does.
