Do we know if the Washington was suppose to relieve the Lincoln? The Washington is actually home ported in Japan.

I think the reports coming from the Lincoln and outcry may have forced Hegseth’s hand. Now the Teddy can either relieve the Washington or head of Japan.

You replied to my reply to @Velocity and appear to have missed some context. I was giving a best guess only to his query.

Fun fact - the original was filming some scenes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (which was playing the Sausalito Aquarium) when I was in Russian school at DLI. I was paid $25 to be an extra in some of those scenes, but I’ve never been able to find myself in the final cut.

I was on the USS Ranger when they filmed the carrier scene. I may or may not be in the brief Hangar Bay scene. We didn’t get any money though. I think we were just considered scenery. 🙂

and yes, I’ve mentioned this maybe a hundred times before. Sorry

> But i know that logistics is something the military is (supposed to be) extremely good at.

The United States Navy is still the very best in the world, but because of decisions that have been made over the last 30 years, it simply can’t do this anymore. Full stop.

You can’t squeeze blood from a turnip.

Just imagine that you are in charge of distribution for a supermarket chain in New York City. You have your warehouse in Queens ( I’m not from there so I have no fucking idea if that’s realistic or not) so you have a fleet of trucks to handle deliveries to the store. Because you aren’t stupid, you know how many trucks you normally need, and add some more for busy days and breakdowns.

Then, for whatever reason, you have to move the warehouses to California. I know this isn’t realistic, but stay with me.

You simply don’t have enough trucks anymore. It doesn’t matter how good you are at logistics. It doesn’t matter if you have the best geniuses working on scheduling. Now the trucks have to go thousands of miles instead of tens of miles. Where one truck could make multiple trips in a day, it’s going to be gone for a couple of weeks just on one run.

You won’t be able to sell milk, ice cream or other perishables and frozen foods anymore.

The decisions were made to no longer have enough ships to supply fleets anywhere in the world. Rather, we built bases close to where we anticipated trouble and calculated the number of supply ships that would work with that model.

But the enemy gets a say, and the forward bases were attacked and essentially knocked out as logistics hubs.

Apparently, the closest base now is Diego Garcia, 2,200 nm away instead of just over a hundred. We had a comfortable number of ships if we could use the forward bases, but not enough now.

We can’t magically build more ships, so the situation is SOL.

There are people in the Pentagon, who understood that this mission was going to be really difficult if it lasted more than (however long).

Trump and Hegseth are not going to listen to reason, so even if the admirals told them the truth, it would get ignored.

Probably every administration and congress from the 90s is responsible in some degree for the basic problem.

What makes this a clusterfuck is that other administrations didn’t start wars with Iran, and they would have listened to the experts.

I’m pretty sure that was never the plan until the DoD stopped pretending the Lincoln could just stay there until the end of the war (ie forever).

As an electrician I had access to a lot of odd spots, so I got to watch Nimoy direct some scenes from a great vantage.

For full nerd cred, I have Walter Koenig’s signature on his picture as Chekov in one of my Star Trek Role Playing Game books

If I had appeared, however minimally, in a Star Trek movie I would mention the fact every chance I got too!

True enough, but the last of the big guys, the New Jersey, was sure welcome in Vietnam. Being able to launch artillery shells 20 miles was a plus, and it was a morale booster for soldiers on the front lines. Not so much for the NVA. I remember hearing outgoing rounds flying overhead to their destination. Sounded like an airborne freight train.

They’ll have to redo the scenes of “all these ships were named Enterprise” in the films. I guess AI/cgi can do it

Hey, I wasn’t in a ST movie. so it’s OK.I’m still impressed.

One of my annoyances from the later years of Starlog magazine is how they would mention actors with a parenthetical of their largest sci fi movie/TV role, ignoring their entire ‘other’ career. So, it’s one thing to introduce William (Star Trek) Shatner, maybe Mark (Star Wars) Hamill, but I think Peter (Star Wars) Cushing and Alex (Star Wars) Guiness might be known for…other roles.

So have fun, What (Star Trek IV) Exit!

All available info supports that The Washington was not supposed to relieve the USS Lincoln. Carrier Strike Group 5 (USS George Washington, cruiser USS Robert Smalls, and destroyer USS Shoup) was in the middle of a planned South China Sea patrol deployment, which included Port Calls in Vietnam and the Philippines and continued patrol of the South China Sea after participating in the Valiant Shield 2026 multinational exercise. Of course, Carrier strike groups can and have been reassigned at any time to address emergent political crises. But if Hegsbreath or anyone from CENTCOM says this was a planned relief all along, I would say they are lying.

> Well, not exactly. More like it was a total war when every resource that could be found went into building ships that might actually be useful.

True but in the interwar period six to eight years was more typical for building a battleship and [_Jean Bart_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_battleship_Jean_Bart_(1940)) set the record at eighteen, albeit due to circumstances.

The point is the process for constructing USS _Trump_ will still be far from laying steel before 2029 rolls around and I am optimistic enough to think that even a Republican President and congress will cancel it.

Well, for that scene, it was already incorrect (in the most literal interpretation of the criteria), since only one US Navy aircraft carrier (CVN-65) was represented, but at the time of production there had already been two.

Not to mention the multiple sailing ships named _Enterprise_ in the pre-independence Royal Navy or the sailing era of the US Navy, which is represented by a single image.

You can assume the heritage list of _Enterprise_ is notional and flexible.

I don’t know if this is off-topic or not (mods, you can decide,) but now the Navy may do the awful thing of taking the Doris Miller name away from an upcoming aircraft carrier and (possibly) naming it for Trump.

If we want to go back to basics, we can include administrations from the 1950s onward. That 1953 coup enabled by the CIA started this chain. And we can look to the British for years of bungling and plundering before that.
