This is the part that really pisses me off:

> Katherine Delgado, 28, Joshua Aviles’ sister, said that Joshua joined the military in part because he thought it would improve his father’s chances of getting citizenship and so that he would “no longer be living in fear of being arrested.”

I believe I have mentioned before that I became an immigration attorney after I left the Navy. If I haven’t, well, I’ve said it now. I focus specifically on noncitizens veterans and their families (I got typecast to work with veterans for being a veteran). Just by osmosis, I have also learned a thing or two about the immigrant family members of US military service members and veterans. I have even filed a couple military parole-in-place applications (which the article briefly mentions).

This pisses me off because even as practitioners in this field know and will tell you that MPIP has grown increasingly rare (they will let you file an application, but good luck getting even a decision on it, much less an approval these days), the military _still_ advertises it as a perk of joining. It’s not a mistake that this young sailor got it into his head that if he joined the Navy he would be protecting his father, maybe even giving him a path to legal residency and ultimately citizenship: I can almost guarantee a recruiter told him that. Worse, it’s not even just some bull shit lie recruiters are putting out: just a few months ago the large Army base near me put out an article about MPIP, and it was specifically issued by _their legal assistance office_, with _one of their attorneys_ in the by-line.

This, even more than the conditions on _Lincoln_, is a national disgrace.

Don’t even get me started on the matter of _deported_ veterans.

Did you know that (male) immigrants have to register with the Selective Service?

My oldest friend’s daughter’s now husband came to the US from Ghana on a student visa around eight years ago and that was one of the things he had to do.

That same friend’s former brother in law legally came to the US from Mexico in the 1960s. He was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam. He’s still here and as I recall, never bothered with citizenship.

While I am at it, here is some trivia. That friend and another friend of ours have birth dates within two weeks of one another. We all registered for the Selective Service together at a post office in December of 1981. We were all together a couple of years ago and looked up our serial numbers on line. Our numbers were sequential.

Well, I certainly do. Proof of registration is actually a required part of an application for naturalization.

and how much did that come after Rep Ron Dellums said “we don’t need the military”? And Mayor Feinstein saying she (SF) didn’t want the Misssouri there. Remember, at the time only Alameda could handle 4 carriers at one time in the Pacific, and Bremerton didn’t have the depth in their bay for one. So basically everything but Concord WS was closed for political reasons.

I mean…no, I don’t think so. I’ll reiterate my [earlier discussion on the topic](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/who-would-make-the-best-us-senator-katie-porter-adam-schiff-or-barbara-lee/979177/53). It just made logical and logistical financial sense to cashier the Bay Area bases, particularly the Alameda NAS. Did some of the local anti-military political rhetoric make it easier to sell internally and maybe generate a little pleased schadenfreude among military planners and Republican politicians? Sure, I have no doubt. But I don’t think it was the major selling point.

The major selling point was that you don’t need a centrally-located four-carrier port on the West coast when you can stash three of six in Bremerton in the north and three of six in San Diego to the south. Redundancy would make more sense if major bases on U.S. soil were under threat. But they just aren’t in the current world climate. Given that it just became a very expensive luxury and it made sense to keep the bases on the wings rather than in the middle.

I kind of got the impression in the articles I read that a _slooow_ walk was more or less the plan, with unwritten implications that maybe the whole idea would get shelved when he’s out of office, and the Navy would go about getting actual useful ships.

Honestly the process of concept to design to approval to actually building is extremely slow these days with the Navy anyway. They don’t have to slow walk it, they just need to proceed at standard speed.

One would certainly hope. The Navy can just announce “we’re examining the idea of EMALS being replaced with steam catapults and making Trump battleships” and count on his 10-minute attention span going somewhere else. In fact, chances are, right now Trump’s already totally forgotten about the battleship idea.

In the meantime though it’s taking procurement planning away from new ship designs the USN actually needs. The Arleigh Burke-class was designed in the 80’s. Obviously the design has been heavily revamped, but there really should be a ground-up redesigned replacement. Or another one, given various options have been considered, planned for, and abandoned, sometimes after producing a couple. Amusingly, the Wikipedia entry for the Zumwalt class has:
Preceded by: Arleigh Burke class
Succeeded by: Arleigh Burke class Flight III
But the [DDG(X) project](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDG(X)) was supposed to be filling this role, and amongst the things that have been said about the Trump class is that it would replace the role of the DDG(X). Which is insane for a whole bunch of reasons.

Is it, though? The Navy is certainly large enough to walk and chew gum at the same time.

I figure they could find some O-5 who “looks the part” but wouldn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground, set him up in an office with a bunch of other time-servers and nincompoops, get him some really cool drawings and artist’s conceptions of different designs that can go under the heading of “battleship” in case he has to go present his work in the Oval Office at some time, and periodically drop bombs about new or revised mission requirements every time he looks like he might produce something actionable.

On 21 Jan 2029, hand him his retirement papers with the thanks of a grateful Navy.

That, and it would still have to grind its way through the Congressional appropriations process, where I suspect it would face an uphill battle, even among Republicans.

Why even bother? I suspect they could easily slow-walk it by planning on soliciting bids for iniial design studies and simulations, and just having the whole process take as much time as possible, by ticking every box, dotting every “i” and crossing every “t”. We don’t actually do this but where I work I’d guess we could add _at least_ six months to a large-ish (by our standards, not Federal) project just by making sure everything is obsessively right at each and every stage and not hurrying to get it done. In fact, in large bureaucracies, the issue is often more how to streamline things in order to get them done in a timely way, not how to slow them down.

But with the Trump administration, some dingus is guaranteed to suggest months could be shaved off the project by using Grok to handle the red tape. We’ve already seen situations where Team Trump is using AI in cases where they shouldn’t.
