> One is that the idiocy of the _Defiant_-class battleships, who’s only saving grace will be that they will never see active service, but will suck up billions of dollars and vital time isn’t restricted to the _Defiant_-class itself. They are going to be the high part of the high-low mix of obscenely expensive ships that, even if the systems needed for them to be effective actually existed (the railguns, lasers, hypersonic missiles and the advanced ammunition for the 5" guns don’t actually exist yet) would make the ships absurd overkill for any role they would actually fill.

Ironically, this sounds pretty similar to the _Defiant_ on _Deep Space Nine_. It was a prototype ship that was overgunned and overpowered and nearly tore itself apart in use, and the class was (initially) abandoned.

Maybe a similar warning about your electronic devices.

during this whole comedy of errors, I was struck by thinking, we have 11 carriers but only 3 available at any given time–what does it say about our preparedness? and all these high-priced vessels are also high-maintenance, so not dependable when needed.

Usually, 5 more carriers can be made ready to go in 1-7 days. A good chance 3 are indeed undergoing more serious refits and maintenance.

> The Navy has about 20 ships in the Middle East, carrying roughly 20,000 sailors and Marines. The logistical challenges are immense: The ships need enough food for more than 420,000 meals and about eight million gallons of fuel each week.

This is actually somewhat normal. If you want 3-4 carriers actually deployed at any one time, you need around 11. Others will be coming off deployment, undergoing pre/post deployment maintenance which takes a while, in a training or qualification cycle, or are in drydock undergoing significant maintenance or upgrades. IIRC the actual USN goal is 2 continuously deployed overseas, with three capable of deploying within 90 days.

High maintenance does not imply low dependability ( or reliability )

If something takes lot of maintenance ( or repair,or being taken off line for operator training etc) , that effect is required in order to maintain the operational ability for whatever operational envelope you have determined .
If you skip the maintenance or go outside the planned operational envelope, then sure you can expect problems. Something that needs a lot of maintenance is typically a something that is expected to have a very high operational ability and envelope.
