Any other dopers got Unreal Tournament 2004?
I installed it last night, decided to have a quick go before bed.
I spent the next 2 hours playing the single player game.
Then I decided to have a go at the online game. I found a server with a low ping that was playing the new game mode - [Onslaught](http://www.planetunreal.com/ut2004/onslaught/). Basically you (well your team) have to control a network of nodes, when you control a line of nodes between your base and the enemy’s you can attack their power core.
Haven’t had that much fun in a long time. Because the map was so big and because it was a team game you could survive a long time and actually be of some use (unlike UT2003 where the sheer pace was just bewildering and not much fun). The sense of team spirit was good, banding together to look after a node of your own colour and defend it from attacks.
It’s just a shame that soon so many people will have the game that it will revert back to bewildering pace mode where the servers are dominated by the usual [sad] gits who spend every waking moment playing the game and learning to be annoyingly unbeatable. I love the first few days of online play where the servers are full of fellow newbies of more or less equal skill.

I spent way too much time playing Onslaught mode when the demo first came out. It took about a week-and-a-half before the bulk of the playerbase got so good that playing became frustrating.

I played the crap outta the demo and am currently playing the crap outta the game and lovin’ it.
Single player…well, I almost never like single player in a shooter, but leading a legion of fairly intelligent bots against the other team is fun and the team management aspect touches my fantasy football geekness.
And multiplayer rules. I just wish I could find a Double Domination server cause it’s fun in SP, but I bet it’d be a blast in multi. Onslaught is so much fun when you get a team–or even a few people–that coordinates well enough to blitz the map.

The onslaught sever I found had a ping of 75. I’ve NEVER found a server with a ping that low. Even when I re-installed UT2003 after getting ADSL.
So playing the game was problem free, no lag at all, except the occasional (too rare to be a nuicance) strange control behaviour (where my player seemed to be carrying out delayed controls. movements I made 5 seconds ago)
Was 75 a very lucky accident? Am I never likely to find a ping that low?
Part of what made it so much fun was that the team co-ordinated quite well, as you said **GMRyujin**. Even though we were complete strangers we all had a part to play.
It was a bit surprising to hear real voices occasionally (I know it’s part of the game)

I’m considering getting it. I’ve got the demo and it doesn’t run very well on my system. I’ve got an Athlon XP 1800+ running at about 1.5 Ghz, 512 Mb of RAM and a Geforce 256 video card with 32 Mb of memory. I’m thinking the weak link here is the video card; however, I don’t want to spend a pantload of money upgrading the card. If I can find a Geforce 2 with 64 Mb for a reasonable price (~$50), then I’ll get it. I’ve loved UT since I first played it, and I’m playing through the GOTY edition now.
I’m also real happy that they’re including the Linux install in the regular box. Thanks, Epic!

I played the demo a good bit an bought the game but have not installed as there would be no chance of finishing the dissertation. As for hosting games, it’s easy. Best if you have a great connection speed, and when running one from the university computers I do.
In fact, they other guys in my office have downloaded the dedicated server software (which you can get for free) but are having some difficulties getting it to work. Great game.

I don’t host games, but I usually find 50-75 ping servers and they run fine.
**TM** -I’m 99% certain it’s your video card, mine’s about the same as yours, except my Video Card is a GF4 and it runs just fine.

Oh, and TM, check [Newegg.com](http://Newegg.com), they had some GF2s with 64MB for around $35-40, just in poking around.

Forget about GF2 cards. For another 20 bucks or so you should be able to get an ATI 9200 with 128 meg.

You kidding? You can get a [GeForce FX 5200](http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=0&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=4635,3668) with 128 megs, for sixty bucks.
Skip an ATI card unless you’re gonna go up into the Radeon 9600 range.
