Vaccum Cleaner Suggestions

I was wandering around Target a couple of weeks ago and was surprised that there are now several brands of robotic vacuum cleaners, including ones from Bissell, Samsung and Hoover. It’s not just Roomba any more.

Recently bought a Black + Decker Powerswivel. Works beautifully and its extremely light. Excellent suction. I actually had one of the first generation Dyson vacuums, and it became a nightmare and a piece of crap even with regular maintenance and cleaning. The hose kept separating, it was heavy as hell, the roller pan on the bottom would never fit right again if taken off once (i suppose friction heated up/warped part of it). I’ve had a Dirt Devil last longer than that Dyson, and all only used for regular household cleaning (no sawdust or too much hair, screws, staples, etc…). In my experience, even a cheap vacuum will last you a long time as long as you maintain it, this was not the case with the Dyson.

What tasks are involved in maintaining a vacuum, besides replacing bags or emptying the canister? I have long hair so I’m familiar with cleaning the rollers … What else should I be doing?
