Only if it was fiction intended to introduce an unbelievable, unrealistic, well-nigh impossible plot twist.

Remember that (according to his parents) he left his phone and wallet behind. As it later turned out, the only thing of note that he took with him was a pistol. Whether or not one is surprised at the suicide (I was, frankly) it seems pretty clear that it was premeditated when he left the house.
