> So, let’s say I pick a comedy. Here’s how our conversation typically goes.
>
> **Me** : Let’s watch (name of innocuous movie; say, Sleepless in Seattle)
> **Wife** : Is it a new movie?
> **Me** : Well, not really, but it’s supposed to be pretty good.
> **Wife** : I only like new movie.
> **Me** : But if you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you.
> **Wife** : But I don’t like old movie. The hairstyles and clothes styles aren’t new. Plus, the house decorations are outdated.
> **Me** : What does that matter? That’s not what the movie is about!
> **Wife** : Well, I’m not watching it if it’s not a new movie.
>
> I swear, the few times we watch something together, we’ll be halfway through and she’ll start commenting on the house decorations or some such. “What about the guy losing his girlfriend to the co-worker?” "Oh, I don’t care about that. Did you see the way she decorated her living room?

This is funny. You should sit her down to watch Joss Whedon’s (lovely) version of Much Ado About Nothing and blow her mind. (Actually a fine interpretation of the play featuring most of the usual Whedon Players. The acting is fantastic. Hearing middle English language coming out of the mouths of people wearing modern dress in a suburban house is a bit jarring, but you should just relax and go with it.)

Husband watches without me “Haunting…” “Celebrity Ghost Stories” or anything related to ghosts or demons or possession. He also has started watching “Downton Abbey”. I mostly don’t watch without him, but sometimes will watch “Chopped”.

I can’t stand the ghost stuff, and will tolerate Downton. He tolerates Chopped, but says it’s “mean”. (Really, Mr. “I watch people possessed by demons to relax”?!)

Together, our tastes overlap a lot fortunately.

My husband loves reality TV, but not the girly ones or kiddie ones. He watches the survivor in the wilderness shows (all of them), American Restoration (and anything similar), American Pickers, Hard Core Pawn (and every other pawn show), and I swear this is just to make me crazy, Ancient Aliens. He also likes several cooking shows/competitions, but those I don’t mind so much (sorry, I love Gordon Ramsay).

He usually tries to watch when I’m not around, and records everything he likes so he can watch at any time. So he watches until I get home from work and finish my nap, when I’m on the computer, and before I get up on weekends.

We overlap a lot in our tastes, so it’s not all bad. But since I know I won’t bother to record anything I like and he hates, my choices go out the window a bit, which I don’t mind. Battling for the TV is not high on my list of priorities.

My wife and I watch probably too many Seinfeld reruns and we have very similar tastes, so we watch most things together although I must admit I’m not a big fan of the house porn stuff…and she hates ‘Family Guy’ (sue me, I have a masters in chemistry, and, yes, I like ‘Family Guy’, no, I hate ‘South Park’…), but that’s why we have multiple TV’s in comfortable areas in the house…

The one thing we do debate is I can’t stand commercials, so I’m quick to mute whenever necessary…she’s a preschool teacher who listens to screaming 3 and 4 year-old children on a daily basis, so she can just tune out and doesn’t seem to understand the need to hit mute when the remote is in proximity to her…

We both agree the Tots in Tiaras shows are waaaaaaaayyyy too creepy…

Ms. DrumBum has an unhealthy craving for the Lifetime Movie Channel. She freely admits that the movies shown all have a similar plot that even a child could follow, but she enjoys them nonetheless. On occasion, I will fortify myself with a few G&T’s and sit down and watch a few minutes but my derisive comments usually get me tossed. Fortunately we have another TV that I can use.

The mister will watch any and every World War II movie ever made. I’ve seen all of them I want to see, many times, so I go and find something else to do. If I hang around, I have to hear some sort of political rant triggered by the movie, or witness weeping and crying ditto. It gets old.

He’ll also watch any movie with car racing and turn the volume up to 11 so as to get the full experience of the revving of the engines. This drives me completely out of the house because I can’t tolerate loud volume anymore.

He’d probably complain about my watching of _The Big Bang Theory_, and _Sherlock_, both of which he despises. I also love the BBC series which are shown on _Masterpiece Mystery_ and he dislikes them because they’re too entangled and incomprehensible. I must watch all these shows early in the morning, before he gets up. In the case of the English shows, closed captioning is helpful because I have the volume on low and it’s sometimes hard to understand what Sidney Chambers is saying on _Grantchester_.

That reminds me, a new season for _Mr. Selfridge_ is coming up, not to mention _Ripper Street_.
