# Vera Stanhope, the most unlikeable detective on TV

But then she wouldn’t be the character. Why does she have to be “nice”? Why does she have to be dressed like every other conventional woman? Why is it a problem at all that she’s conceived as she is?

She does grow somewhat, especially after a tragedy in the department.
