So last night I’m hungry. I’m feeling an urge for some Kung Pao Chicken and fried wantons with hot mustard. So I call up this little place I know. I’m tearing into the bag, and I notice that the boxes carrying my rice are red instead of white. “That’s nice,” I think. “Makes it a little easier to tell them apart.” Then I notice that the red ones have a big Verizon logo on them. Apparently, fiber optic TV is coming. The only question I have about this is, how much money is the owner of the restaurant getting for this? ---

The short answer, I guess, (no offense intended) is “none of your business”. Why does it matter to you that your food is packaged in the livery of Verizon rather than the restaurant itself, or the paper company that manufactured the boxes? You liked the color, be happy with that. Maybe the proprietor saved enough money from not having to buy boxes this month that s/he could give the cook a bonus: that would be a good thing. Thanks for the tip on fiber-optic TV. I’d heard that before somewhere, but it’s good to have it authoritatively confirmed. And there was a time when I would have killed to have the number of a place that would bring hot “wantons” to my door, especially dressed all in red. Are you sure this joint is a restaurant, or might that be just a front? ---

I don’t know about Verizon, but I could go for a spicy dish of Szechuan Catherine Zeta Jones about now. ---

Free boxes is the winning answer. I was at a sushi-to-go shop once when someone came in and offered up a carton of 1,000 paper bags with someone’s name and logo on them. The manager/owner happily and rapidly accepted the free bags, probably not knowing or caring what was going to be happening a week later in Booth 17560 at Oracle Open World. At least they didn’t say “Bring this bag to our booth for a free mouspad!” For bags, at least, the value is low (about twenty bucks for 1000 bags, plus the cost of printing) but every nickel saved is significant to mom-and-pop restaurants. ---

Hey, I’m all for them saving as much money as possible, so I can continue to dine on their delectable dishes. I guess I’m just frustrated to see advertisements on **EVERYTHING** these days. ---

I’ve been seeing this with pizza boxes for a while now. I’m quite frankly surprised it took them this long to think of it.
