Very Annoying Racial Myths. Discuss it.

Why are we all to assume the OP is any sort of expert on all things racial? :dubious:
He/she has yet to provide a cite for any of the claims he/she has made. So far it’s just been opinion. Yawn.

The tentacle porn jokes made here whenever Japan gets brought up get old very quickly.

Guess what? That stuff isn’t considered normal in Japan, either.

Another typical example of people who claim to be experts on something they know nothing about.

Who’s making that assumption? The OP has definitely gotten some things wrong. I guess he gets a little credit for knowing that some of these stereotypes are dumb.

I mean that they have a lower PERCENTAGE of drivers. The streets are going to be packed with cars because of the higher population density. But there is also a significantly lower percentage of driver’s compared to the USA. There are other means of transportation than just driving.

I hope you don’t really think that East Asians as a race are genetically bad drivers.
Even though I’m not Asian, the stereotype is a stupid one.

It used to piss me off when people said I was the whitest sounding black person they knew until I asked one of these people how many black people they knew that werent me. Everyone I’ve asked since has also said “zero” so now I just laugh it off.

Also, don’t ask any girl of any ethnicity about her weave. Nothing good comes of that.

I don’t stand corrected. I read the whole thing. He said, paraphrasing here, that we shouldn’t call people MEXICANS because Mexico actually is home to a diverse people from different places and cultures. I don’t see why that should stop us from calling them MEXICANS when they are, in fact, from Mexico.
Americans also are from a wide variety of cultural, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds, but most don’t complain when we call them Americans.
So he had an argument once with some ignoramus who thought Mexican was a race. Still doesn’t mean we shouldn’t call people from Mexico Mexicans.

Then you didn’t understand it.

No, he said you shouldn’t assume Mexican people are all the same race because Mexico is home to diverse people and blah blah blah.

Of course I don’t think it’s genetic. But the fact that Asians drive like crazy people has nothing to do with how many of them drive and how often they drive. It’s cultural.

That not exactly what I said. I said it annoying to hear someon refer to Mexicans as a race. It’s alright to refer to them as a Nationality, as in where the person is from, or where there parent’s are from.
Another thing you can’t do is talk about racial differences, or mention physical features about Mexican people since Mexican is a Nationality, and not a race.

Furthermore, you might not know if a person is Mexican, they could be El Salvadoran, or Honduran. It is better to just refer to them as Central Americans. So you can call someone Mexican when you know where they, or their family is from their.

What if they’re South American? Or even if they are Central American, why is that okay to say but it’s not okay to say someone is African if you don’t know which African country they’re from?

These rules of yours are very hard to learn.

Yeah, plus there is no such thing as “talking black” some people need to hear what different African, and Jamaican accents sound like. From my own experience, black people in the South, especially in rural areas speak diffently than black people in other parts of the US. They should also know that not all black people speak English. They need to explore outside of the USA.

What most people think is “talking black” is actually ebonics. Speaking in ebonics makes someone look like they didn’t even graduate high-school.

I’ve wondered seriously for a while now whether Japan is weirder than most other countries, or if it just exports weirder things than most other countries?

We are talking about a country where you can buy schoolgirls’ used panties from vending machines The Love Machine | Snopes.com

It seems I got the wrong message across. You shouldn’t call someone African unless you actually know they are African, you can’t just say someone looks African. Not just for Africans, but for other people as well. It would be more correct to say that someone looks like they descend from West Africa, but African is just too vague.

We need to come up with a better vocabulary to describe different ancestries. One thing that would be correct is to say that someone looks like an Bantu African.

Considering the State of Florida.

Snopes is not that great at discernment. I’ve corrected them a number of times about Japan. One (which they have temporarily pulled) also mentioned on this site, about supposed skirts faux see-thru skirts. This other site correctly doesn’t buy it, where Snopes had inexplicably said was “Undetermined” despite the obvious errors in photoshopping. In that same section was a picture of women wearing scarves shaped like breasts which Snopes had unquestioningly passed along as normal fashion, where a quick google search showed they were from an art festival. (Which was pretty obvious from the picture, I could tell it was some from of trade show.) They changed the status after I complained.

Anyhoose, while they correctly site that selling used panties are now illegal (since 1994ish) they have accepted without question that “many readers have reported that these exist.” As far as I can tell, they don’t. I’ve seen youtube videos of what are reported to be ones in the back of porn shops, but they seem to be boxes of new panties.

Yes, one could purchase used panties back in the early 90s, but you can’t now. Maybe somewhere but you would have an easier time finding cocaine in the States.

It also was never the case where the vending machines were out in public. They would be in sex toy shops and such, not in train stations as is frequently claimed.

But I do know they’re African. It’s not only based on a person’s appearance of course, names and accents and languages and other things are also clues. There are tons of people (I live around a whole bunch of Africans) that I know are African even though they’ve never specifically told me they are and I don’t know which country they’re from. It would make no sense to pretend that isn’t true.

Maybe your issue is that you think just identifying someone as “African” means you think it’s all just one big homogenous group. That’s not true though. You can know there ARE differences without knowing what they all are. I don’t think anyone is competent at identifying members of more than a handful of the world’s thousands of ethnic groups.

Yes, just to re-iterate, Japan can certainly seem like a strange and fascinating place, but, as far as panty vending machines go, they no longer exist.

China was a wild experience in terms of drivers, but Seoul has always been entirely orderly.

As a Jew, I’m getting pretty tired of all the tightwad jokes. Last time it happened I had my attorney brother sue the offending party. My big shot Hollywood producer cousin is making a movie about it (the profits from which I’m going to use to expand my diamond dealership).

All kidding (and possible thread shitting ; I swear it’s not my intention)aside, I’m kind of surprised at the earnestness with which people are responding to the OP. Do you really care that much about stupid stereotypes?
