> Big stick ideology, big stick diplomacy, big stick philosophy, or big stick policy refers to an aphorism often said by the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt; "speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far". The American press during his time, as well as many modern historians today, used the term "big stick" to describe the foreign policy positions during his administration. Roosevelt described his style of foreign policy as "the exercise of intelligent forethought

So Lou Reed was [singing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYUIZg3bhjU) about Canadians? Never would have guessed…
BTW, **PatrickLondon** , that is very curious poster in your article about the crucified soldier. It seems it was printed in the Philipines for a Spanish speaking audience, but they got the Spanish all wrong.

Canadians certainly weren’t nice to Japanese Canadians during and after WWII.

During the war, the Japanese Canadians who were living in British Columbia were sent to internment camps. This also happened in the U.S. But unlike the U.S., they were not allowed to return to their homes after the war ended. Some were even exiled to Japan.

IT appears to have been a poster prepared by the US gov’t after the US entered the war.

Note the term “Liberty bond” and the US flag.

> **[Liberty bond](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_bond)**
>
> A liberty bond or liberty loan was a war bond that was sold in the United States to support the Allied cause in World War I. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty in the United States and introduced the idea of financial securities to many citizens for the first time.
> There were four issues of Liberty Bonds:
> Interest on up to $30,000 in the bonds was tax exempt only for the First Liberty Bond.

Not surprisingly, warfare seems to bring out the worst in human beings. There is no logical reason to believe that Canadians would be any different. Keep in mind that those Germans who were asking for “more” would also have killed those Canadians in battle the very next day with no hesitation whatsoever.

Especially considering how well the Japanese treated the POW’s under their care. [Oh wait.](https://time.com/3334677/pow-world-war-two-usa-japan/)

> Of the 27,000 Americans taken prisoner by the Japanese, a shocking 40 percent died in captivity, according to the U.S. Congressional Research Service. That compares with just one percent of American prisoners who died in German POW camps.

Canadian government treatment of Japanese Canadians was terrible, yes. Land was literally stolen from them. And amends are being made even today. The context of what was going on in the world at that time is important however.

Most Canadians are reasonably nice. Many are not. Stereotypes, even when they are somewhat accurate in a general sense, obviously do not always apply to everyone. I have met a number of tourists in Canada shocked to have their wallets stolen, etc.

The real Canadians on a hockey team are the goalies, not the toothless gorillas who go around attacking each other with fists and sticks and smashing each other into the boards. Goalies are skilled, patient, methodical, and never fight. In fact, if an enemy player tries to mess with a goalie, there is at least one Designated Gorilla on his team who will make short work of the offender. The gorillas are mostly European communists, anyway.

Goalies. The _ **real** _ Canadians.
