Victory Doughnuts--love 'em or hate 'em

It was the Brickyard 400, though. One of the major races. I remember Alan Bestwick (or one of the other NBC commentators) making the remark, “This is a huge win for RCR, and for Harvick. I don’t think Childress will mind paying the bill for the damage, in this case.”

curse you. all of you.
now I want a doughnut.

If Richard doesn’t care, why should I?!

What do you think about all the rumors about Jr and DEI having contract issues? And is that Helton to DEI rumor dead now?

[/hijack]

I think Jr. just has too much on his plate right now, what with starting Chance2 and being in the midst of a points race. I think he’s pretty secure in his future with DEI (hell, it’s gonna be his someday, isn’t it?), and sees no reason to rush through a contract. I’ve heard a major sticking point the number of sponsor related appearances? He wants less, so that he has more time to hang with the DMP, and concentrate on living up to his legacy by winning championships, I believe. The media is just looking for a story, and is throwing around rumors where there is no story.

Junebug cut down his appearances significantly this year, check out his calender on dalejr.com. It seems to have really helped, Jr. was what, 15th in points at this part of the season last year?

I don’t know wtf is up at DEI, depending who you ask everything is running fine or a screaming match between Ty Norris, Teresa and Steve Hmiel. I wish Ty was running the racing part and just let Teresa run the business/marketing/PR part. According to rumor, she fucked up that Hornish deal.

Maybe we should start a ongoing MPSIMS thread for comments about NASCAR, races, drivers and rumors. You could create it and call it Victory Doughnuts - All things NASCAR!

Too many more knowledgeable NASCAR Dopers who would be more suited to the task. I’d suck it up big time.

The DEI-Junior thing is almost definitely a case of “too many chiefs.” Ty should be in charge of the racing stuff, but Steve thinks he deserves it, and Teresa is either not involved enough or too much, I can’t decide which.

I don’t doubt that the Hornish deal got derailed by Teresa and Steve.

Junior’s probably not going anywhere. There’s too many issues involved there: Budweiser, Junior and the Eurys being a package deal being a big part of it, plus Junior’s involvement with Chevy. He might end up at RCR, but that seems unlikely right now. All he really wants is an out if part of DEI gets sold or if someone new joins the board. He’s also probably looking to get some ownership in his name.

He’s not going to Ganassi or Hendrick. I will guarantee that.

That said, I think this week’s paint scheme on the 8 looks awesome. Anyone agree?

{hijack}There’s very little stress on the driveline components when the back end has no traction.{/hijack} It’s what I’m counting on as the rear-end is now the weakest link (excluding the tires) on my hobbycar.

'Nuther disappointed pastry-seeker here…

No doughnuts?

:frowning:

I would like to correct an error by the OP. The act of celebrating a win is called a burnout, not a doughnut. In racing terminology, a donut is a tire mark on the side of a race car. I have been watching racing for years and I have never heard the of a race winner performing a victory doughnut.

A donut is where the driver deliberately spins the rear tires while turning hard, so that the rear tires lose traction, which causes the car to spin in a tight circle while making lots of smoke. A burnout is where the driver accelerates hard enough to break traction and make lots of smoke without spinning.

Victory donuts have become practically de rigeur in CART and NASCAR, but I don’t think they’re common in other series. I have never seen one in F1, for instance (if somebody ever tried it I think we would be deafened by the subsequent harrumphing).

Of course, donuts aren’t original to racing. It has always been a popular way to vandalize golf courses or show off in parking lots.

Please refer to the linked article, in which that “error” of which I speak is also refered to as a “doughnut”. I know what a donut in the infield is (a la Earnhardt at Daytona '98), can point to one on the side of a car at Bristol (provided there’s enough sheet metal left), and am aware of what a burnout is (again, I am a Harvick fan. He brought them into vogue in NASCAR). I had just read the linked article, and had the same terminology in my head when I posted.

As long as the nit pick is out, I would like to point out your error in the statement that “the act of celebrating a win is called a burnout, not a doughnut.” This is not really true. The act of celebrating a win takes many forms, from jumping up and down on the roof of your car (banned in NASCAR now, as you know), to turning donuts in the infield, to performing a burnout, to circling the track in the opposite direction (usually in a clockwise direction–the “Polish Victory Lap”, in honor of the late Alan Kulwicki), to simply taking the checkered flag and heading to Victory Lane to thank your sponsors.

While I, too, have watched racing for several years (introduced to the sport by a former girlfriend in '94), although maybe not as many as yourself, I have a decent knowledge of the origins, history, rules, and terminology of the sport. I trust that going forward, you will find it in your heart to overlook future slips in turning a phrase, especially when they obviously come from published articles used as cites or links.

Yes, and there will be a die-cast store 60 dollars wealthier in Bruce_Daddy’s neighborhood in the near future.

My vote was going to be for Dunkin Doughnuts! <g>
