And there is a distinct order to the Metroid games. It goes Metroid/Zero Mission, the Prime series, Metroid II, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion. ---

Traditionally followed by “select, start” in order to switch to two players and then start the game (in Contra), but this is not actually part of the code proper. Which is why your variation works, incidentally. ---
