Nobody in my family thinks that there’s any better food than Olive Garden breadsticks and alfredo sauce with a little Parmesan cheese added. Mmmmmmm…

My friends and I were discussing this very thing not that long ago. I would _love_ a pill to take instead of eating (and not just in restaurants?). Sure there are some foods I like a lot, but I’m not a foodie and would love how much time, money, and mess it would save to just take a pill like on the Jetsons. No grocery shopping, putting away the food, menu planning, cooking, eating, cleaning, etc. Sign me up!

I worked as a cocktail waitress in college and had customers ask for (and receive without complaint!) milk. On this one, I consider the source.

> I don’t know ANYONE who would turn down a meal at: Red Lobster, The Olive Garden, Applebees, Smokey Bones, Pizza Hut, any Chinese Buffet or (fill in your favorite middling restaurant here). Or KFC, Burger King, Subway, even McDonald’s. (Maybe Taco Bell, some people just don’t like Taco Bell.)… If I proposed a meal at any of these places, I would NEVER hear them whine about how mundane and inauthentic, blah blah blah. WTF? 😕 I would hear, loud and clear, “wait up, I’ll get my coat.”

You would hear no thanks if you asked me. I turn all those (except Smokey Bones, what is that?) down regularly. Well, Subway I eat at, but if you invite me there, I will look at you like you are crazy. Let’s find a more personal place than that.

As for the OP, I have never seen anyone suggest that ~23 essentially identical suicide attempts in 2 years by one person is cause for celebration about the lifestyle choices of the beloved suicidee and nothing to worry about much by the family. I was pitted here once for making this point, I suppose I might be again just now. Don’t bother looking for it - it was so over the top a pitting that the mods deleted it.

Well, sorry you won’t be joining us, not\_alice. Feel free to make yourself a peanut butter sandwich while we’re out, cause that’s all there is in the house for lunch.

I have never seen so many slow cooker recipes - mainly for chili. In fact, this is a great place to get any kind of recipes, and that’s what I love about the SD. (Not that I’m lacking for recipes IRL, but there are so many excellent ones offered up here, so fast.)

(ooh, just saw about the shoes above - for as long as I can remember, people around here have taken off their shoes when coming into peoples houses. I’ve never told anyone to do this, and they have never told me to. It’s just automatic, no idea why! It’s not like we all have pale carpets.)

I will be at the local place down the street, enjoying the food that is not the result of “standardized processes” and the company of people who favor that sort of thing - they tend to be so much more interesting kinds of people.

I guess I will stay somewhere else next time I visit 🙂

I really don’t know what you’re talking about. Apart from fast food & pizza, you can barely find a chain restaurant in Australia. Hogs Breath Cafe has a couple of restaurants around the place, Sizzlers used to be here but it’s now closed down. I’m trying to think of what the equivalent of “let’s go to the Olive Garden” would be in Australia and I’m drawing a blank.

There are heaps of Sizzler restaurants in QLD, as well as a few Lone Star Steakhouses. True, we don’t have a local equivalent of IHOP or Dennys (which saddens me) but I’ve been to the US several times and I _like_ the food at those places.

Then again, I’ve never, ever, ever had a pizza from an independent Pizza place that I thought was as good as (or worth the exorbitant amount charged for) as one from Dominoes or Eagle Boys.

Also, there was a Dennys in Christchurch where I grew up and it was a very popular place to eat because it was open 24/7, had good food, and was reasonably priced. No-one I knew would have knocked back a meal at Dennys without a very good reason (“I can’t afford it” or “We had dinner there last night”), for example.

> Wow. I’ve never met anyone who thought that but here. I mean, I know people who like well done steak…just never knew anyone who thought it was all that unusual to like medium steak. You’ve seriously never heard of [steak tartare](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steak_tartare)?

Only recently. Well, I’d heard of it, but I didn’t know what it was. While I technically didn’t learn about it on the Dope, it was after I became a member. I saw some cooking show, and was shocked that they weren’t going to cook it. I actually felt sick when I saw the cook put it in her mouth.

I also, like a lot of these people, live in chain restaurant land. We have the less expensive chains, and a few out of the way places, but all of them seem to want to mimic the chains. It isn’t unlikely that we are dealing with lesser quality beef. I’ve had my steak come out undercooked before, and it was absolutely awful. It tasted like iron (which I hear a lot of people don’t even think has a taste). I used to actually call that stuff blood because it tasted like when I’ve had a bloody nose and the blood has accidentally run down my throat.

The one time I’d heard of people eating raw or (what I consider) undercooked meat was from oldtimers talking about how they used to eat it with no problems, but that now, the overzealous FDA made it illegal. Combine that with the little disclaimer I saw at one restaurant saying they had to serve their steak at least medium, and I concluded that it was universal–that rare steak could not be served except at home.

It wasn’t until the thread about President Obama’s steak preference that I learned my personal tastes in the matter were generally viewed as low brow. And I still don’t get people who think it tastes burnt.

Many threads with “TMI” in the title should be exempt from this discussion; of course people are going to ask about the viscosity and/or caloric value of ejaculate on an anonymous bulletin board.

I had never conceived that a person would stick a wedding ring up their nose before reading the SDMB, and don’t expect to hear about the practice IRL.

Also, “neti-pots.” Until a few weeks ago, I’d never heard of them; now I own one.

I have one friend IRL who’s such a vocal and bitter athiest that I’ve always suspected that he believes in god more than any of my religious friends.

I also have a colleague who claims not to have a TV, but I suspect he’s lying.

I don’t know anyone IRL who would refuse to go to a Chili’s or Olive Garden on principle. Why alienate yourself from the few people willing to put up with you over such a small issue?

All of those steaks are best eaten medium rare at least; otherwise, you don’t really taste the flavor of the beef. You don’t get the blood and juices that make it a great steak. A lower-end cut of beef at Applebee’s or something, I don’t really care if it’s a little done, because I’m just going to put sauce on it anyway. But a real steak needs to be on the rare side for all the flavor to come out.

I’ve never had a steak less than medium. Maybe I should try it. Rare meat has just never sounded appealing.

I used to actually call that stuff blood because it tasted like when I’ve had a bloody nose and the blood has accidentally run down my throat.

This is a sign of a lesser quality cut of steak.

Not to get too technical, but it tastes like iron because there is iron in there. Muscle has myoglobin, a molecule similar to hemoglobin in blood that uses iron to bind oxygen. The more a muscle gets used, the more oxygen it needs, and the more myoglobin it has. So if you eat a steak that does a lot of work, like round, shank, or sirloin other than top sirloin, it’s going to have more iron in it and yeah, taste like a bunch of coins. But if you cook it long enough, the compounds break down and you don’t get that taste. But muscles that don’t do a lot of work, like ribs, short loin, and tenderloin, don’t have nearly as much iron in them, so can be cooked rarer and taste good, and are also more tender.
But to get back on topic:
In real life, I don’t know any guy aged 18-45 who wouldn’t plow Megan Fox like a corn field had they the opportunity and were single.
