Vintage motorcycles

bdgr, heard it, love it, learned it, play it. Thanks.

Maybe others can get turned on to the wonder that is Richard Thompson (and Linda, when they were married.)

Yeah, Richard Thompson is a bit twisted, but I love his stuff. Did you read the Hunter Thompson link above? Talk about a man obsessed with Vincents

Yes, Hunter Thompson. That’s where I heard about Vincents.

The Czech Jawa is a single cylinder, right?

hey, jill- i thought you had decided you wanted the yamaha virago 250? change your mind?

try this: find yourself an 89 or 90 honda gb500. vintage look, modern componants (disk brake, both elec and kick start), low seat height, relativly light, absolutly bullet-proof engine (it an XL500 basicly) and an absolute gas to ride! they are hard to find, but worth it. good ones are going for nearly $4K! they were only $2500 brand new! (no, mine is not for sale!) i’ll let you test ride it for a 12 of beer! let me know next time your ever in the middle of nowhere…

can someone who isn’t a computer neandrathal link a picture for jill? im too busy evolving a thumb…

and check out those jawas. they have some interesting stuff.

Here are a few links with pictures:

Saw the pictures. So Jawas are still being made or are people recommending just the old ones? I don’t think anyone in my town sells them.

royal enfield bullet!

modern classic. brand-spanking-new 30 yr old bike! cheap, easy to ride and maintain, classic look!

Hey catfish, how much do these “royal enfield bullets” weight/cost and how available are they in the US? Still making them? I just mentioned jawas to my husband* and he informed me that his first bike was a jawa.
Jill

    • the man who is balking at me buying a motorcycle, which is why this is still in the talking stage.

I just looked up the royal enfield bullet. That is a hip looking bike.

Jill, have you tried the listings at http://www.cycletrader.com ?

jill-- the bullets are still made but distribution is not very wide. (if memory serves me, i think they are coming from india. royal enfield is a british make and these bullets are still produced in india-- kinda like VW beetles are still made in mexico) if you check out the link that jeff left, you will probably find one somewhere. i use the print version of cycletrader and thats where all the kooky stuff is listed.

i don’t recall specifics, but they are relativly small and slow, not too intimidating to learn on. the technology is old-school, so they are none to modern, but since they are “NEW” the componants should all work! (im an optimist!)

using this same logic, i am shopping for a Ural with sidecar. these are eastern-bloc BMW copies that are basicly 40’s technology. ugly and slow, but rugged and easy to keep moving, plus i can take QueenBee and DroneBee for a spin with me.

i really like the kawasaki triumph copy (W650) you mentioned earlier, but can’t justify the price they want for them. it would look really good in the stable, though!

be sure to check out a photo of the GB500. cool ride!

tell hubby to get with it and help find a bike, or you will go do it yourself! (that will get him motivated!)

The Royal Enfield bullets made in India are not all that great reliability wise but they are very easy to fix.

There is a company in the UK that takes the basic bike and then reworks it a whole lot but when I do a search I get zillions of hits.

I have seen one though, done up as a cafe racer with aluminium tank, and rev counter. It looks great, the picture here looks a bit squashed up.

Ah here’s a much better piccy, now I’m sure you’d want something like this…

Finally I found just the thing, the UK reworker I mentioned earlier, now you just have to get one of these.
