We were told at work not to turn our computers off before we left either - just leave them on all night until the problem is fixed.
I got 200+ of those freakin’ emails, and all of Kohler Company’s email is shut down - worldwide.
I bet this kid is really proud of himself…
I just started up Internet Explorer and it had a blank start page. So out of curiousity I checked my registry and the registry key WIN-BUGSFIX was created. I didn’t find any .vbs .vbe or love* files on my harddrives. The thing is I never received any mail with Iloveyou or Ilikeyou or whatever the alternatives were. I don’t know where I would have gotten the bug. I get my mail with Outlook Express.
My workplace was shut down due to this as well. I work for an internet data provider, and one of our databases is devoted to jpeg images–bad news. But, I got nine holes of golf in!
Okay, now I’m afraid to open my e-mail. I have Mcafee ActiveScan automatically screening my e-mail - can the worm get past this? My computer automatically contacts Mcafee at 10 a.m. CST for updates - would they have had something by then? Should I check again this evening for updates? I guess I shouldn’t download my e-mail until I’ve got something from Mcafee tht will stop this thing in its tracks?
Damn, I have a lot of e-mail I need to get to. And I’m on several mailing lists - I’ve probably got 100 damned contaminated messages waiting on me. Either that, or I’ll be the one that infects a few thousand people through MY computer.
Shit, shit, shit!
People like you are why lynch mobs were invented.
This critter made its way to my office. We were told to log off the LAN about 45 minutes before I was due to leave. Why couldn’t that happen at, say, 9 am? All joking aside, I hope things are fine there now.
Much as I enjoy a good lynching, one is not in order today. Allow me to elaborate.
Microsoft, like all big corporations, feels absolutely no obligations to ensure quality in its products as long as we, the sheep at large who exist only to give them our money, are willing to buy their products ignorantly with no concern for their (the products) security or reliability.
Quality has been sacrificed on the altar of ease-of-use, and as the breeze of lower costs enabled by less debug time fans the flames of positive cash flow, the smoke that is the concept of tight and efficient code drifts up to heaven, pleasing the nostrils of the CEO. so to speak.
The only thing that causes such a behemoth as Micro$oft to realize the errors of its ways is public embarrassment. We in the IT industry have been griping about shoddy workmanship and sloppy methods in products like Windows for quite some time, but did they listen? No. Not until somebody like ILOVEYOU’s author comes along and poses a threat to their market share by demonstrating that GASP! Microsoft’s products are NOT SECURE??? Wow. And you do not need a programming language embedded in every single application you own. that’s ridiculous, not to mention just BEGGING for someone to exploit it. Sadly, just like all the other lessons that have been slapped across Microsoft’s collective face, this will not teach them a lesson about taking greater care when writing programs. All it will teach them to do is to pour more money into the legal system, buy more judges and juries and senators, and make it illegal to show that their products are insecure and unreliable. Wait, that’s already been done! It’s called the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Pardon me whilst I vomit.
So yes, I’m glad it happened. Besides, other than adding vb code to some files and shutting down a few mail servers with too much traffic, it didn’t do any real damage. If the worst thing that happens in your day is that you receive a few hundred e-mails that say “I LOVE YOU” and this bothers you all that much, then you really need to reconsider your priorities.
With love,
Joe Cool
Just a heads up to everyone, I am sick of this damn virus/worm as I had to do some preventative measures and delete the thing off a users computer. But thought you might need this information.
The latest version’s subject heading is called “FWD Joke” and I believe the file to be renamed “Very Funny”.
Just thought you should know:
Ok, some simple advice.
STOP USING OUTLOOK! Or Outlook express.
- Turn off that damned preview pane in your inbox. (View-> UnCheck Preview)
- When the hell did you get a email that was titled “ILOVEYOU” from your boss, his secretary, Your VP, CEO, etc, etc.
- If you never sent someone an email, why would you get a reply “Got your email, response to follow. Until then open this attachment that’s obviously a trojan!” Think before you click.
- TURN OFF THAT PREVIEW PANE (View-> UnCheck Preview)
- If you get an email from someone you DON’T KNOW or WERE NOT EXPECTING from an external source, delete it. It’s probably spam anyways.
- Go here! and select “a suggestion on how to improve a product” under Microsoft Products. Ask for a SIMPLE way to turn off or eliminate the VBscript engine in Outlook. That’s how too many EMail worms work.
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/feedback/default.asp
- Try turning off the preview pane. (View-> UnCheck Preview)
- If someone you know sends you an executable file or zip, call them and ask them what the heck it is. You never know, s/he may say “I didn’t send you anything!”
I’m fresh out of rantable ideas. Anyone else have some suggestions?
Oh, ya. Turn off that preview pane.
