> I’ve been to the Bronx Zoo and the Museum of Natural History many times myself. Taken the kids there when they were younger, too. They are awesome and amazing, but we’ve been to zoos and seen natural history museums. Seeing an icon like the Empire State building and the view of the city from the observation deck is unique to NY, though.

I wanted to visit the Natural History Museum, but didn’t have time. Instead, my wife dragged me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I didn’t want to go; I’ve been to are museums all over the USA and the world, and they’re pretty much all the same to me: a bunch of crappy, clay pots and other anthropology that I have to pretend to admire as art before I can get to the cool paintings that I actually do enjoy. Except, wow!, the Met, all that boring crap was arranged in an artful way. I still enjoyed the paintings best, but I can say the Met was a cut above other art museums when it comes to the stuff I’m bored of.

The Met is a lot more than paintings and pots. Did you see Henry VIII’s armor? The Egyptian temple? The furniture? So much cool stuff in there.

> Shows you the respect it gets in New York. The only thing I knew about Paterson is that [Lou Costello was from there](https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2164)

Also Allen Ginsberg and William Carlos Williams, although they don’t have the same cultural panache as Lou Costello.

I was like 11 when I learned this. But I saw the best baggy pants comics of my generation …

> I’ll check out the Tenament Museum. Looks interesting!.

Not just interesting…absolutely fascinating. For adults and kids.
It’s not a museum with guiderails…it’s a real apartment, just like people lived in 100 years ago. You are not just looking _at_ an exhibit, but standing _inside_ the living space and the lives of real people. Just walking up the stairway to the dwelling, with its totally insufficient and unsafe lighting and lack of fresh air, makes you realize that , hey, life was tough back them.

Advance reservations required, I think.
