What do you Pittsburghians think of Michael Chabon’s “Mysteries of Pittsburgh?”
I know, right? My family gets our birthday cakes from there every year.
Ah, two others I thought of!
There’s Klavon’s Ice Cream in the Strip. You definitely want to check that place out – it’s this little old-fashioned ice cream palour. Just the atmosphere is worth it.
And of course, I would also reccomend St Nicholas Croation Church in Millvale, which is famous for the murals of Croation artist Maxo Vanka. Trust me, you don’t have to be the slightest bit religious, just a fan of good art. (I was lucky because back when I was in college, and doing an internship at the Heinz Museum, they were having an exhibit on Vanka.)
Have a great time!
We visit the Bulgarian Macedonian National Educational and Cultural Center (BMNECC) for the Cajun/Zydeco dances that are held there. Cool art, realistically dressed mannequins, beautiful architecture.
ETA: the Bulgarian Macedonian people have nothing to do with Cajun/Zydeco culture or dancing, they are just happy to share their building.
I thought I would do a follow-up on this.
The mini-vacation to Pittsburgh went very well. Thanks again for all the suggestions. Especially entering the city through the Ft. Pitt Tunnel – that view is spectacular!
We were there two full days. On the first day we walked to the Andy Warhol Museum, and it’s something I highly recommend. We then took an Uber to the Strip District and walked up and down Penn Ave. That’s a really nice place. And since it was Easter weekend, the food shops were very busy. Afterwards we walked to the Heinz History Center and spent a couple hours there.
On the second day we took an Uber to the South Side at around noon. Interesting place. But it was pretty “dead” due to the time of day. (It’s mostly bars.) My wife and daughter liked the vintage clothing stores. And there was one place that sold contemporary furniture. Afterwards we went up the Monongahela Incline, walked west along Grandview Ave., ate at the Coal Hill Steakhouse / Grandview Saloon, and went down the Duquesne Incline. The views up there are magnificent.
Also walked around downtown and ate at some nice restaurants. And that’s about all we had time for. The next time we go, we will also be sure to visit some of the other places mentioned in this thread, including the museums at Carnegie Mellon.
