[Apparently, she died March 2.](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/people/obit_brief_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000465324) Hung hard with Orson Welles’ posse, 1949 Oscar for **All the King’s Men** , soft spot for James Dean in **Giant** , offered up obscene suggestions in **The Exorcist.**

Aw maaaan…now I am well and truly depressed. Miss McCambridge was the (intended) recipient of one of the few fan letters I ever sent. I had just read her autobiography “The Quality of Mercy.” This was in the mid 90s and the book was published in 1981. I assumed she must have died in the intervening years, then on that year’s Oscar telecast they had an assemblage of the living winners and there she was. I couldn’t find an address for her so I sent the letter to the Academy. Years later I found out that they don’t forward mail, the bastards.
