> [Fivethirtyeight](http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/tighter-restrictions-are-losing-in-the-battle-over-voter-id-laws/) discusses the effects on the election. My takeaway is this:
>
> The research doesn’t look specifically at nonwhite vs. white, or Democratic vs. Republican, turnout. However, my understanding from other research, including that performed by NC Republicans, is that the depression in turnout will disproportionately affect nonwhite Democratic voters. In close elections, the success of such laws may result in a Republican victory; having such laws blocked may allow enough people to vote that the existing Democratic majority can actually win the election.

The laws are designed to target latinos, blacks, college students and the disadvantaged (the poor and disabled). As a whole, these groups go democratic about 70-80% of the time (blacks vote democratic a little more, college students a little less, but overall that is about the ratio, maybe 3-1).

So that is 2 net democratic votes for every 4 votes cast. So if that is 2% of the electorate, that is a 1% net gain for the republicans.

For those who think that all these measures are merely “good ideas” needed to “strengthen the integrity” of elections.
