One the one hand, I can’t stand the fetishization of civility. Civility is not an end. It’s a means. The end is _decency_. When you fetishize civility and treat it as an end in and of itself, when you pay more weight to the empty gestures and rituals than to the decency from which they’re supposed to flow, you get…well, the internet, where civility is a club to hit people with and the moral high ground is just a better vantage point from which to throw mud. So, yeah. Reflexive signatures? Please, no. When I see “Regards” at the end of every single post, including flames and snide insults, I begin to suspect that you don’t actually hold us in any kind of regard at all. I would prefer honesty over insincere, knee-jerk crap. On the other hand, [QUOTE=bucketybuck] What else is jerkish? Perhaps people wouldn’t feel the need to post signature like comments after their posts if their signatures weren’t limited to the first post in a thread. Changing that limitation would allow them to say whatever they want in the way of a sig-like closing whenever they post, and it would allow those who don’t want to see them to block them. Win-win it looks like to me, and it would save the “Enjoy, Stephen” types a lot of typing. ---
