Well, if they’d thought of it, then the plot hole is all the more infuriating.

Yeah, Richard Matheson blew it with this one. Odd, because he’s usually pretty good about dealing with gaping plot holes. Especially since it could have been dealt with by a few lines of dialogue.

We’ve been watching them too - he’s such a frat boy from a third rate satellite campus, though, isn’t he? We think he went to Starfleet Salkahatchie. Every time he flips out his communicator we yell “Where you at, dog?”

> Oh, they’d thought of it all right. Take a look at the back of the model: big hanger doors. They just hadn’t given any thought to building one because the budget was so tight.

I cannot see from the original lead-ins too well, but it doesn’t look to me like the model as originally filmed had hangar doors at the back. Which isn’t to say that they aren’t there. But I would be willing to bet dollars to donuts that the reason the shuttlecraft is “overlooked” in the episode in question is that they didn’t have it established yet that the ship had one.

See the [top diagram](http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/What_If.pdf). That’s based on the original 11 foot model used in the series. I maintain that there wouldn’t be a shuttle bay if they hadn’t thought of shuttles.

> 1. Despite the odds against her being impregnated on a one off (and we all know humans to whom that has happened), I assume that Deela would only um, proceed if it was her most fertile time. This may be an incorrect assumption, but stay with me. If this is so, isn’t there now a Kirk Jr running around, buzzing like an insect?

There was never any danger of L’il Jim showing up because the Scalosians ran at, what, a zillion times faster than normal. And any human that drank Scalosian water was vulnerable to the slightest injury.

So normal Kirk’s swimmers could never have caught up to Deela’s egg, and speeded-up Kirk’s swimmers got smashed to smithereens (probably from being buffetted during Deela’s writhing) before they could get to the egg and fertilize it.

Science answers everything!

Why do you think I’m re-re-rewatching them? He was hot back then.

Sure he was a hound, but a gentlemanly hound. Given what passes for “romance” and sexual liaisons today (“hey girl, wanna hook up? You’re hot and I’m horny”), I’ll take it. He doesn’t seem too frat rat for me (but my frat rat impressions are 20+ years old. No frat rat ever had that much aplomb with a beautiful girl. Just MO).

He didn’t actually go tail hunting–those female aliens threw themselves at him which makes episodes like the western themed one where the girl throws herself at Chekov all the more humorous!

That last is the thing that makes me Okay with the whole situation. From what I’ve seen, he never forces himself on and rarely “seduces”; it’s like the porn universe, wherein you can’t fuck a woman by force because she’s too busy dragging you onto her. Unrealistic, maybe, but acceptable.

Besides, I found a link somewhere that said how many times Kirk actually slept with these girls and not just kissed them, and it wasn’t that many.

I fixed this for you. We all know what was really happening off-screen. 😉

But it’s fantasy, so if you want, you can believe that he wouldn’t sleep with just anyone, and you really are special to him.

For all we know it was in the original script and got cut. Given the wind howling on the planet, the shuttlecraft problem never bothered me. Not sending them a tent or some wood at least, did.

Just FYI, editing text that’s inside quote tags, attributed to someone else, is pretty seriously frowned upon around here.

Do you really want an evil tent wandering around, divided in its nature? _Do you_?

_snerk_

I think the only evil tent wandering around in that episode found its way into Rand’s quarters.

Hey, the situation was stressful enough. They certainly didn’t need the landing party getting two tents.

And good Kirk would have gotten a good Rand and formed a partnership in which they could never decide on any restaurants.

Having just rewatched the digitally remastered version of _Is There In Truth No Beauty_, my main “wait a sec” moment was: why is everyone so hot and bothered over Diana Muldar? Pretty? Sure. But so pretty that everyone at that creepy dinner party scene was fawning all over her? Not so much.

What bugged me was how it was implied that Muldaur’s character wasn’t behaving as a woman should - i.e. she was going to pursue some purely intellectual career instead of waiting around on a pedestal to be admired by (and, it is implied, be of occasional service to) a man. The whole thing had a creepy _A Doll’s House_ vibe to me.

It was a weird epsode all around.

> The unanswered question about “The Enemy Within” is and always will be "Why didn’t they beam down bricks, or fuel, or shelter, or any of a hundred inanimate objects that would actually be \*\*more useful \*\*duplicated?

I vaguely recall a throwaway line about them beaming down heating units which “duplicated and became useless”. That doesn’t make much sense – if duplication could screw up a function as basic as converting stored energy into heat, the duplicate Kirks would have instantly dropped dead – but it’s a stab at patching the plot hole.
