Wait a sec...You call the wind 'Mariah'?! Why? (The Paint Your Wagon thread)

The rest of the world is way ahead of the US in naming winds. In fact they all have names. Some examples:

The VW Scirocco, named after a desert wind.

The Maserati Mistral, named after a northerly wind of southern France. Maserati is particularly stuck on wind names, maybe all their cars are named after winds.

Here are more:

Dennis

Here in southern California, we call the wind “Santa Ana” (when it’s hot and dry and blowing from the desert.)

I don’t know of anything even close to Tess and Joe. We do give names to our big fires – the Witch Creek Fire, the Cedar Fire, etc.

ETA: I really like the movie. I love the bit where they take the kid to the whorehouse to get him a cigar, a drink, and a woman. I also like the business of the woman with two husbands: that’s pretty daring for a U.S. movie! And, no, Clint Eastwood can’t sing very well…but Gold Fever was a fun song anyway.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are named.

Zephyr was the Greek god of the gentle western wind.
