> It’s a cover of [Van Morrison’s Gloria](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RI-QtEAwvE) with a few lines from [Patti Smith’s poem Oath](http://bibliofreakblog.com/memes/freeverse-oath/) added.

Gloria (nitpick: it was written by Van Morrison, but first recorded by his band Them) actually is one of rock’s most covered songs. It’s a garage rock classic, which I’ve always found quite ironic, given the fact that Van’s later solo output is anything but garage-like.

> The Carpenters’ “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” (Youtube [here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcNwcKOP6bo&feature=related)) was a cover of the same song, written and recorded by Klaatu on the _3:47 EST_ album (Youtube [here](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9URM_5R-vWk)).

When they were together, Klaatu never sold many records, but they got a LOT of publicity, because rumors abounded that they were really the Beatles, who had secretly re-formed.

> Sparky812, “All The Young Dudes” as done by Mott The Hoople was written by David Bowie.

I only included the reference as some background on Ian Hunter, I did not claim he wrote it or that it was a cover.
I remember back in early 90s Bruce Dickinson covered ATYD on his _Tattooed Millionaire_ solo album.

ETA I see now that my post could be read in a manner that suggested Ian Hunter because I used the word “also”. My apologies.
