Wal-Mart Demographics?

Good point. AFAIK there are still only four Targets in NH - in Salem, in Concord and in Hooksett (next city/town to Manchester) and in Nashua; I’d like to give you better info, but using the store locator on the target site doesn’t find anything, perhaps because the closest stores to here are more than 40 miles away (OTOH, there are 10 wal-marts in a 100 mile radius of my house if you wondered). Now, I wouldn’t go to Nashua if you paid me, because it seems to take about 4 hours to cross the state east to west, but I’ve been to the Wal-marts in Salem, Concord and Hooksett. The only one that’s remotely trash is the Salem store, and the Target there isn’t any better.

If you know nothing about NH’s population, it’s worth pointing out that all four Targets are in cities, of which there are few in this state. These are also the biggest cities other than Manchester, but as I mentioned there’s one the next town over from Manchester. If the placement of Targets (for the love of God why won’t they put one in Dover, Epping or Portsmouth?! Or even Exeter) is similar in other states, they’re only ending up in “large” cities too, so it might be worth comparing those stores not only to the Wal-marts in the same cities, but compare both city stores to the wal-marts in smaller areas as well. I’m willing to bet you’d see a greater difference in clientele between Wal-marts in urban areas and ones in suburban and/or rural areas then you’d see between Targets and Wal-Marts both in urban areas or both in rural areas if there’s such a thing as a Target in a suburban or rural area.

I can’t say I disagree with much of the Wal-Mart hating going on… I worked at Target myself for a year and I enjoyed it, and I respect the company greatly… Something I can’t really say the same of for Wal-Mart.

Anyways, I completed my paper contrasting Wal-Mart to Target on topics of pricing strategies, customer demographics, and differences in product lines/store atmospheres. If anyone would like to take a read, I’ll post a link online.

Thanks for the help again!
