Walked out of a restaurant tonight for the first time in my life

I hate the whole waiting-for-the-bill then waiting-for-the-credit-card business at the end of the meal. It can easily add 10 or 15 minutes to the visit. I often ask for the bill at the time I receive my last course. It usually comes before I’ve finished eating. I still have to wait for the credit card to come back, but I’ve saved one flagging-down step.

I don’t have an issue with not being asked by the waiter if everything is all right. If I have an issue, I’ll usually bring it up rather than wait until I’m asked.

“FYI, we’re trying to catch a movie that starts in 10 minutes, so whatever you can do to speed up the process would be much appreciated.”

You’re nuts. They did not wait on the table, let alone decently. The fact that somebody took a rushed order and somebody else delivered some food does not add up to service. Their volume and staffing are not the customers’ problems.

When this happens, I do some shouting.

If the manager gives me shit, I leave.

I walked out of a restaurant once in Vegas.

I have been in the industry for many years as a chef, manager and have even owned my own places. The friend I was with has almost the same level of experience but mostly front of the house.
It was by far the best service and maybe the best food I have ever had.

It was me and a buddy we met up in Vegas for a few days we were dressed in clean cloths but not particularly nice. Maybe not the ideal choice of clothing but it was not busy and we were loaded with cash and he wanted to hit a celebrity restaurant. They had no way of knowing WE COULD AFFORD it.i would have questioned our table. Our bill was over 400.00 and only ordered one glass of wine.

We got a great table. The server somehow figured out name from our hostess in a magic quick exchange I was not able to notice.

We were treated like kings every second. And ordered a fixed price 3 course meal.

Each course had 4-5 dishes. Every single one memorable. The server asked appropriate questions and I found myself twice asking questions a little deeper then I would normally ask. Hell I usually know everything going on in and around the food without asking. Like if the port vinaigrette used reduced port wine or a bottled port vinegar. The server knew instantly. I asked another technical question quite to my surprise it just seemed like it was natural course if the service. The flipping server knew the food intimately and answered without hesitation and was well informed.

The bill and attentiveness and food were timed magically.
I will go to Vegas again just for that place. Fuck gambling.
And hate fancy restaurants.
I am attracted to chalk boards.

I walked out --happy.

You owe nothing to a restaurant except to pay what you owe (including tax and tip) when you leave. If they can’t be bothered to send someone by in a reasonable amount of time to give you your bill, you should feel free to make a fuss about getting it. Say loudly that you want your bill, walk up to the register and ask for the bill, walk toward the door and announce that you’re leaving unless you get the bill, or whatever. You have no obligation to them not to make a scene if they decide to ignore you. Quit being polite to places that treat you badly.

My personal policy is that I never overtip or undertip. I generally have no idea who caused whatever problems occurred. In any case, I seldom see significant problems. If I don’t like something about what a restaurant did and I see no attempt to apologize for it, I simply don’t go back to the place.
