Ha! The dreaded Brazilian tour groups - the bane of Walt Disney World visitors whenever they have the (extreme) misfortune to run into one of these loud, obnoxious, chanting monstrosities.
From what I understand, the Brazilians that make up these tour groups are teens (pretty obnoxious in and of itself) who come from rather moneyed families and who, in there own culture, look upon anyone in the service industry as veritable insects who are there for the express purpose of doing the Brazilian teens’ bidding.
In other words, it’s a cultural thing.
And, lordy, do I hate those Brazilian tour groups. They out-obnoxious even the dreaded cheerleader groups during the annual Pop Warner tournament.
Largely, yes, it’s teenage tour groups, but the phenomenon was also noticeable whenever it was whole families. Adults on their own tended to be a bit more civil.
I always cut the tour groups some slack, since I would probably be just as miserable dealing with 40 American teenagers, though for different reasons.
When I was 16 I went to Disney World with my cousin and his family. My cousin and I were in one of the shops on Main Street and two Brazillian teens came up to us and asked us to get a picture with some American boys. We obliged and just before the picture was snapped one of the girls grabbed my ass.
So somewhere in Brazil, there’s a picture of 16 year old me getting groped by a Brazillian teenager.
First off, you’re a kid then. 15% is what I remember. But by stealth tax I mean most people know the percentage, but have no clue how much they pay in actual currency when they purchase things. If a good like in the US has a price sticker on it, that shows me how much goes to the store. I then know how much the government is taking.
It went up to 17.5% in the very early 90s. Last Budget under Thatcher or first under Major, don’t remember. It goes up to 20% next year. The Tories increasing regressive taxes you say! At least most food and things like kid’s clothes don’t attract VAT. I think domestic fuel is charged at a lower rate - 5%?
(Bolding mine) Who genuinely, honestly, no internet faux-outrage, actually cares about that? There’s fuck all you can do about the amount anyway- your local MP/Representative is just going to nod politely at you, make soothing noises, then promptly forget and ignore you as soon as you leave their office when you complain to them about it.
As long as the tax amount displayed on the receipt (“Includes Taxes of $X”) then you get the same information and the displayed prices are honest- “This is how much of your money this item is going to cost you”.
As for tourists and complaining about them: There are times where the tourists are far more trouble and inconvenience than the money they bring in is worth, and those people are absolutely entitled to complain about the problems.
Complaining about tourists in big cities seems silly, though- there’s lots of people in the city anyway, and regardless of whether they’re tourists or locals, some of them are going to get in your way, stop in the middle of the footpath, get lost, have loud conversations on public transport, etc.
