Want to see a flat world in 2D, without depth perception? Try it.

No “depth perception” all my life, and I get along fine. There are something like twenty depth cues, and only three of them use both eyes.

Looks like there are 18.. If you think of it, no one at a movie or looking at a magazine says “Oh, no, I have no depth perception! I mean, how do I know that pedestrian is in front of the car, and the building is behind, with the skyline is farther back?” We just use all the rest of our visual depth cues.

But I’ve had one good eye and one terrible eye all my life. Got taken to specialists as a kid, where they told me and my parents “Well, the eyepatch didn’t work, because it’s not a lazy eye. We could try surgery that may work. Or… hey, kid, how’s life without depth perception?” “Fine, I guess. I decided it’s probably like a movie for other people. I really don’t mind it.” “Do you enjoy going to all these eye appointments?” “Ummm, not exactly.” “Okay, then you’re done.”

The only problem I’ve had is racquetball. Moves too fast; by the time I get to use all those “other” depth cues, the ball’s bounced off my nose.

The ophthalmologist told me amblyopia (lazy eye) has nothing to do with the EYE. It’s a brain problem.

My poor depth perception really blows up when trying to PARK.
