Coulter specifically said “Canada _sent_ troops”. What does that mean? It means the government, of course.

Ten of thousands of Irish citizens fought with the British in WWII, but neutral Ireland did not “send troops”.

You don’t _have_ to weasel all the time when a conservative pundit is shown wrong. Or perhaps I impugn your motives: I agree she’s a hottie, but don’t let your chivalry get in the way of the fact that she was off the mark.

Well, as I cited above, Canada-the-government _did_ send troops to Vietnam, as did Canada-the-people. Take your pick of semantics, but Ann was correct.

How many Canadians in Vietnam were prosecuted upon their return?

Irrelevant - failure to prosecute an action is not equivalent to ordering it. Try another example, though - do you get “sent” on holiday by the government? Do they pick out your destination?

Depends on what you call “troops”, I guess. Canada sent “peace keepers” and diplomats because it was a member of the International Control Commission, which supervised the French Indochina ceasefire beginning in 1954. Canada also sent quite a lot of arms and equipment to Vietnam to help the US, including TNT and Agent Orange.

Well, quite a few, if by “prosecuted” you’re generous enough to include “screwed out of legitimately-earned benefits”, as many of the Canadian vets claimed.

So, if Canada “sent” those men to Vietnam, did the U.S. “send” Lindh to Afghanistan? It’s exactly the reference I’d’ve made, had Badger not beaten me to it. If “prosecution” is somehow relevant (and I can’t imagine how), then I poit out the numerous Americans who travelled north to Canada to enlist prior to December 7, 1941. If the U.S. was “sending” them to do so, then the U.S. was a de facto participant in World War II, and thus it was perfectly within the rules of war for Japan to attack. You could even say Japan was nobly defending its German ally and the attack on Pearl Harbor was completely justified.

I know humour often has an element of hostility, Brutus, but your alleged “jokes” have _only_ hostility, with no real wit or originality to them. If you’ve ever bothered to wonder why you inspire such dislike, you might consider working on that.

**Spooky Action** does seem to have an inordinately passionate dislike for **Brutus** , I must say. I noticed it right away just skimming through the thread.

But hang in there, **Brutus**. Keep fighting the good fight (although why you would want to subject yourself to this kind of abuse over such a tempest-in-a-teapot issue remains unclear to me).

[The Final Declarations of the Geneva Conference July 21, 1954.](http://vietnam.vassar.edu/doc2.html)

Coulter’s rhetoric was obviously in regards to Canada acting in concordance and alliance with America.

> [@](#):

> Canada used to be one of our most loyal friends and vice-versa. I mean Canada sent troops to Vietnam - was Vietnam less containable and more of a threat than Saddam Hussein

When, in fact, Canada did not send troops as part of any war effort, but as part of a peacekeeping force. At best Coulter, and you, are distorting facts. At worst she’s a partisan shill and you’re, well, you know.

Final Analysis: Canada did not participate in Vietnam as an American ally as Coulter claims. She’s wrong, and a partisan hack.

And I have said just that in the past. What do you think we would do to a country that openly engaged in ‘Lend-Lease’ type behavior with Al Queda? The problem with Japan is that there were no declarations of hostility prior to their attack. But here is an idea: Stop with the stupid comparisons.

Canada-the-governemt sent troops to Vietnam under some peacekeeping mission. (Tied to the peace talks). Canada-the-people sent troops to Vietnam via enlistment in our own Army. End. Of. Story.

They are _all_ good fights. Some people seem to think they should get a free pass to bash with wild abandon; If inserting a few facts sends them into such fits of idignation, well, nothing to be done about that.

Bullshit. End of story.
Canada-the-people? Is this some weird communist propaganda **Brutus**? Did a bunch of Canadians get together and vote on who to send to Vietnam?

Canada-the-people did jack shit.

Some Canadians, of their own free will, chose to participate in the war effort. It is obfuscatory and dishonest to claim that the Canadian people ‘sent’ them.

Unless, of course, America-the-people really did send Lindh to Iraq to fight against our military.

> When, in fact, Canada did not send troops as part of any war effort, but as part of a peacekeeping force.

I can’t see in your cites where it says Canada ever sent any troops at all. The Wikipedia article says this about the 1954 stuff:

> [@](#):
>
> During the first conflict between France and the Indo-China nationalist and communist parties Canada remained uninvolved but **provided modest diplomatic and economic support to the French**. Behind the scenes Canadian diplomats tried to discourage both France and the United States from escalating the conflict in a part of the world Canadians had decided was not strategically vital.

No mention of troops, and no mention of any post-war involvement, either. Your second cite doesn’t mention Canada at all. Your third cite only says:

> [@](#):
>
> During the years 1954 to 1975 Canada served on 2 international truce commissions and provided medical supplies and technical assistance. Canadian diplomats were involved in negotiations between Washington and Hanoi and successive Canadian governments, both Liberal and Conservative, maintained that Ottawa was an impartial and objective peacekeeper, an innocent and helpful bystander negotiating for peace and administering aid to victims of the war.

Nothing about troops there. Remember what **Brutus** ’s cite said:

> [@](#):
>
> INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION FOR SUPERVISION AND CONTROL CAMBODIA, LAOS AND VIETNAM Authorized under the Geneva Accords 20 - 21 July 1954 to ensure the cease fire was obeyed, to assist in restoring order as military forces transferred to their respective areas and to control the entry of unauthorized military personnel and war materiel. Ceased to function in all areas 17 June 1974…
>
> INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION FOR CONTROL AND SUPERVISION SOUTH VIETNAM. Authorized in January 1973 to monitor the cease fire in South Vietnam, supervise the exchange of prisoners and to ensure no build up of military equipment. Canada ceased operations in July 1973.

That cite doesn’t mention troops, either.

> [@Brutus](#):
>
> If inserting a few facts sends them into such fits of idignation, well, nothing to be done about that.

**Desmostylus** : A very good point. I’ve been trying to find a cite on the number of Canadian troops sent as peacekeepers, and I can’t find one. Perhaps I was giving **Brutus** too much credit… Just because Canada was operating in a diplomatic capacity does not mean they had boots on the ground.

Curiouser and curiouser.
