Hello? _tap tap_ is this thing on?

It doesn’t matter whether or not Canada sent peace keeping troops becuase that is clearly not what Ms. Coulter was talking about.

Can anybody find a cite as to the number of official Canadian peacekeepers on the ground in Vietnam during the war?

It does, however, seem that there were Canadian peacekeepers on the groud.

[About 18 months ago, Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson created the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal to recognize Canada’s peacekeeping efforts over the past 50 years. About 70,000 medals were awarded to Canadians for their role in countries including Cyprus, Yugoslavia, **Vietnam** and Cambodia.](http://www.deloitte.com/dtt/article/0,1002,sid%253D5806%2526cid%253D14812,00.html)

Sure it does. In the interest of fighting ignorance, I for one would like to know exactly what Canada’s participation in Vietnam was. Although you are correct that it clearly wasn’t what Coulter was talking about.

> At best Coulter, and you, are distorting facts. At worst she’s a partisan shill and you’re, well, you know.

According to the [Canadian government](http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/peacekeeping/menu-en.asp), peacekeeping has traditionally been “a primarily military activity” and lately has been broadened to other forces as well, such as the RCMP. In 1954, Canada sent 133 of the 400 units that supervised the withdrawal of French forces from Vietnam. In 1973, it sent 248 of the 1,200 units in South Vietnam to supervise the truce. ([Cite](http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/peacekeeping/missions-en.asp).) The CBC reporter was wrong if he stated that the Canadian government never sent any forces to Vietnam or Indochina.

With a strict construction of the exchange, yes, he was wrong.

However Coulter was clearly implying that Canada sent troops in support and alliance with America, which is plainly false.

I would still argue, however, the even though peacekeeping is a primarily military activity, sending troops and sending peacekeepers are different actions. Especially since Canadian peacekeepers’ role was to protect the peace, and United States troops’ role was to blow the hell out of anything that moved.

I wouldn’t expect you to argue it any other way. And I’m certainly no fan of Coulter. But from where I sit, it looks like you’re standing on a clothesline at the end of a ledge as you argue it. I don’t envy your task.

Your cite doesn’t actually say that Canada sent anyone anywhere. And what’s this “units” bullshit? That doesn’t come from the page you cited. There’s nothing in your cite to contradict the Wikipedia article.

Perhaps.
I will admit, readily, that in practice the dividing line between military forces and peacekeepers can be blurred. After all, a bullet fired by a peacekeeper will kill you just as dead as a bullet fired by a US marine.

I think, however, that mission objectives may be used as a litmus test. To my knoweldge Canadian peacekeepers were tasked with protecting truces and such, and not rooting out the VC. Although, I must admit, my knoweldge about the Vietnam war is far too sparse for my liking.

I will bow out of this debate for now and allow older and wiser heads to discuss the matter.

In closing and to tie this to the OP I will say [Wow, she’s hot. Look at that Adam’s apple! Wait… wait a minute…](http://www.ramdac.org/article/id/54)

> Two weeks after the signing of the Paris Peace Accord, Canadian members of the hastily-formed International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) are feeling that their presence in Vietnam is more symbolic than real. ICCS **observers** feel like frustrated spectators because they have **no actual powers of enforcement**. They are **not permitted to investigate** violations of the ceasefire as this is done by the Joint Military Commission field teams. The CBC’s Joe Schlesinger reports on the situation.

So what’s the story here? Some powerless observers sent in after the war ended = Canada sent troops to support the US during the Vietnam war.

Wankers.

As others have said, Coulter was wrong because she implied that Canada sent troops to fight alongside the U.S. More importantly, her flustered response showed that she didn’t know jack about the peacekeepers in 1973.

Hmmm…Hungary, Poland, and Indonesia also sent troops to supervise the '73 truce. That means that Indonesia and Hungary were our allies and fought right alongside the U.S. Oh, and Poland. Don’t forget Poland.
