We’ve just submitted a bid on a sailboat. If we can make a deal, it’ll be ours next month. But the name has to go. I mean, really - _Sassafras_?!?!? Other boats we’ve owned have been: Kyuquot, Talisman, Hocus Pocus, and Wandering Star. The only one we named ourselves was Talisman - the others came with names. We considered a number of names for Hocus Pocus, because that’s a stupid boat name, but we sold her before we decided on a new name. But some of the ones we tossed about included Paradigm Lost, Paradigm Shift, Leakproof, and Entropy. Naming vessels isn’t our strong suit. So, since Dopers are among the cleverest folks I know, I turn to you for suggestions. I didn’t know that sassafras was a tree. I did know that Sassafras won the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in 1970 under Yves Saint-Martin because it carried the added burden of my cash. My suggestion is _Serendipity._ ---

these are from Dave Barry, but i think **Testosterone Torpedo** or **Sea Biceps** would be great names for a boat. ---

My stepfather was a signwriter, and back in the sixties sometime, he did a boat name for a guy who wanted “Marlin”. Being a big Brando fan, he spelled it wrongly, but the guy thought it was so funny he told him not to worry about fixing it. I’ve always thought Marlon was a cool name for a boat… Then again, my stepdad also left the P out of “cupboards” on the side of a truck because there were girls sunbathing in the yard next door, and his mind was elsewhere… ---

I had a little sprit-rigged sailing dinghy. Due to its size I thought of naming it _Leviathan_. I also considered _Funky Dory_ or, if I painted it grey, _Dory In Grey_. I never named it anything. I saw a sloop in Blaine called _Campbell’s Sloop_, presumably named after its owner. The font was the same as on the soup cans. My favourite name was spotted while kayaking in Marina del Rey with **Spiny Norman**. The sloop was simply named _Fred_. ---

You could name your boat, “_ **After You** _.” That way you can tell everyone, “We named the boat after you.” 🙂 I once saw a boat painted in camoflage green colours. The boat was named, “_ **What Boat?** _” Boat is one of those words that looks funny if you type it too often. Boat boat boat boat boat. ---

In the Washington Daily News, long ago, there was a comic strip. One frame, actually, appearing daily, about a group of monks. One of my favorite was a picture of the brothers aboard their sailboat, “The Fiscal Irresponsibility III.” Tris ---

How about the **Seaward**? This would be funny if you’re an Arrested Development fan. The Finding Nemo DVD has an easter egg in which they list all the names for the boats in Sydney Harbour. I don’t know if all of them were actually shown, but one I liked and use it as a screenname on some other sites is **the surly mermaid**. ---

Not to take the thunder from **Lamar Mundane** , I humbly suggest _Below Me_. Also: _Shipfaced_ _Broken Wind_ A while back, there was an all-woman sailing race that I remember hearing about.
