Wanted: Rich male Purpose: To buy Mini Cooper for poor, deserving **liirogue** Here is my case… I have been pining for one of these suckers for a year now, and I’m not much closer to my goal. Simply put, I can’t afford to pay $300 a month in car payments (and that is a conservative estimate). So I have come seeking a rich male (or female!) who is willing to either a) buy me a Mini or b) put enough down on the Mini for me so I can afford it. Yes yes, I know what you all are thinking. Why on earth would someone want to buy a car for a complete stranger? Simple! I am a hardworking, full time college student, I work part time, I am intelligent, witty, well-read, fairly attractive, and **I just deserve it, damnit!** My husband has even condoned seeking a benefactor (I think it’s because he’s tired of listening to be pine). So if any of you Dopers know someone who has some money they don’t know what to do with, (and I only need a small amount, really… only about $10,000 or so) my email’s in my profile! ---

Sure **liirogue**. I just gave my little bro 5 grand because he totaled his car two weekends ago. While I’m at it why not cut you a check for 10! 🙂 However, we have a slight problem here. If you want to write an expository essay to my wife as to why you need the money, and then ask her if it’s ok I cut you a check… it may work…maybe… _disclaimer_ When I told her I gave my bro 5 grand for his car she turned into a veritable Gorgon and got quite cross with me. ---

I’ve carefully considered your request, and I want to help you. I am going to do you an immense favor for which you should feel everlasting gratitude. I am not going to buy you that car. My not buying you this car will teach you a valuable lesson about deferred gratification, self-reliance and the human dignity of doing for yourself rather than begging. Work hard, and save your money until you have enough to buy the car. At that point the satisfaction of stepping into the car you purchased with the money you earned that you owe nobody for will far outstrip the short term thrill of having somebody to buy you a car, and the attendant guilt and degradation of your self-worth that such a gift would give. The greatest gift my father ever gave me was when he didn’t buy me a car, and even though I have only known you from this short thread, I must confess that I feel close to you, like we have a bond, that you are my daughter. So, I would like to pass on this same gift of not car buying with you, as my father shared it with me. All I ask in return is that somewhere down the road, you do the same for another person as I have done for you today. Enjoy. ---
