I have never heard a Southern person use this phrase, and I have spent most of my life in the South. The only people I have ever heard say “The War of Northern Aggression” were Yankees who were saying it to make fun of Southerners who they thought would say such a thing.

I’ve lived only 15 years in the South and have heard the term many times spoken by southerners. However, it is always said with tongue in cheek, as no one believed that Lincoln and the Union would let the South secede.

OpalCat asked:
I believe they simply call it the American Civil War, just as we refer to the English Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, the Russian Civil War, etc., etc. As for the Revolution, I’ve seen British sources refer to it as the War of American Independence. Other nations probably use similar terminology.
I’ve also heard Brits refer to “that unpleasantness in 1776” .
I’m guessing this discussion will die out now. As history has shown, a thread divided shall not stand.
I used to work with a man from Georgia. He told me one day of his disbelief of finding a statue somewhere in Ohio, erected to the honor of the Union soldiers who had died in “the insurrection.” He felt this was Yankee hubris, belittling his ancestors.
