Do mods want/expect/care about a response when people get warnings? Assuming they’re not going to be convinced to change the moderation, should we respond in agreement, apologize, or just watch our post from now on without acknowledgement? What’s the typical response? How do mods want us to respond?

I usually plead my case by email to the Mod in question. Batting about .333 so far. The warning I got from **JC** I didn’t even try to argue. I wear that one with pride.

I can’t say I “expect” any response to a warning. In fact, in my experience 9 out of 10 warnings get no response whatsoever from the poster. (This somewhat surprises me, since IRL most people getting traffic tickets make some kind of response to the cop issuing the ticket, whether an apology, explanation, or cursing him out.)

An apology or explanation is certainly appreciated, even if it doesn’t cause me to reverse the warning. (I have, however, reversed a number of warnings when the poster convinced me I had misinterpreted the post, or due to other mitigating factors.) An apology at least indicates the poster understands the rule and has some concern about following it in the future.

Disputing the warning in a way that indicates the poster doesn’t understand the rule, or intends to keep on disregarding it, isn’t likely to make me sympathetic to future violations.

If you disagree with a warning, it’s better initially to contact the mod in question by PM or email to find out the reasoning. Disputing the warning in the thread itself is against the rules and can result in another warning.
