The news from the national media regarding the blackout in the Northeast seemed to be along the lines of … Blah blah New York New York blah blah New York New York blah New York New York New York New York blah New York New York blah New York New York New York blah blah blah New York New York blah blah New York New York blah New York New York New York New York blah New York New York blah New York New York New York blah blah blah New York New York blah blah New York New York blah New York New York New York New York blah New York New York blah New York New York New York blah blah blah New York New York blah blah New York New York blah New York New York New York New York blah New York New York blah New York New York New York blah blah … oh, by the way, Cleveland was affected. Blah blah New York New York blah blah New York New York blah New York New York New York New York … Buffalo, Toronto and Cleveland have subways were people could have been trapped, but WHO CARES? It’s not New York City! Detroit and Rochester have hospitals where foks on life support could have been threatened, but WHO CARES! It’s not New York City! Anyone else miffed by the NYC-centric coverage of the blackout in the Northeast? ---

I’m assuming this is supposed to be in The Pit instead of Comments on Staff Reports, and I’m sure someone will be around to move it soon. Yes, I was commenting on this last night and again this morning. We had CNN on most of the evening, and it pretty much sounded like you described it. Every so often the crawl at the bottom of the screen would mention that Detroit, Ottawa, et al were without power, or there would be some discussion of what may have caused the blackout. But almost all the major coverage was focused on how NYC was affected, how New Yorkers were reacting to the crisis, _ad nauseum_. I don’t think I saw one camera shot of anything but NYC. This morning they finally had some coverage on the other areas that were affected. Briefly. Then it was back to NYC again. I had the impression that if Korea had nuked Tokyo last night it would have posted on the screencrawl, and maybe mentioned during one of the infrequent “elsewhere in the world” segments. ---

Yes, let’s not forget that although Erie, PA isn’t as ‘big and important’ as NYC, they didn’t have power either. Of course, we don’t really need 24/7 news coverage that says ‘The electric is still out’. ---

Gee, I never knew Erie had electricity to begin with. 🙂 To the OP, exactly. The blackout hit 4 or 5 states plus Canada and the only thing broadcasted is NYC. Maybe the real reason is it’s a way for the out of town news companies to get back at the New York guys. There they are, a big time New York news company and they can’t report on anything becuase they have no power. ---

Yeah, a few areas outside NYC lost power too - Bergen County, Hudson County, Westchester County, Long Island, and parts of the Midwest and Canada. 😃 ---

Hm, actually I was kind of pleased that CNN knows where Toronto and Ottawa are and cares whether they have power or not. I’ve been taught not to expect much. ---

[It syas right here](http://www.pjstar.com/news/topnews/g85869a.html), and lots of other places, that there were “outages that spread over 9,300 square miles.” That’s roughly a 100 X 100 mile area, and New York City is, ~30 X 30, so _of course_ it went dark in other places as well. That’s the wonder of a free press, they keep us _informed_. 😃 ---

CNN would occasionally show a map illustrating how wide-spread the blackout was… and then go back to video of New York. I never saw **any** video from Detroit, Cleveland or Toronto. That just seems like poor telejournalism to me; wouldn’t it have been more effective to show video from all the major cities involved, to drive home how many people were affected? ---

I just assumed that none of the major news providers had any camerapeople or journalists whatsover in the other cities. What? Erie does have television? Cutting to the other cities might have made the coverage a little less boring, if nothing else. It was pitiful, listening to five hours of news that amounted to “Nope, still no power. Nothing else to say, but we’ll continue to talk anyway, while showing you these pictures of New Yorkers making their way on foot, just like you’d expect any reasonable person to do.” ---

I can’t speak for the national coverage, but Chicago’s NBC affiliate actually had one of their reporters **drive to Detroit last night** just so she could report from there. But yeah, the whole “ohmygod, NYC has no power! - oh, and at least 4 other states not to mention part of Ontario - but wow, no power in NYC! lookit that! whoa! and look how mannerly they’re being!” bit got really old after a while. ---

Yes, I noticed. I was one of the few folks in my area that had power (though my work place did not). I was miffed as well. word is that De-troit will be substantially w/o power until **Sunday**.
