Over the years I’ve watched various sitcoms in which a scene will call for a Hot weather girl (wearing skimpy clothing) forecasting the weather on the evening news. I’m wondering if this stereotype has any basis in reality. I was born in 1970 myself and I can safely say I can’t ever remember this happening. But maybe it was a California thing? You know back before “PC” was entered into the American lexicon. (heh, heh) ---

That stereotype always struck me as odd because when I was growing up in Columbia, we had [Susan Aude](http://www.ed.sc.edu/kridel/Images/fisher-1.jpg). She was a lovely young woman, but there’s something about a wheelchair that, to the average guy, does not scream _hottie_. And for long-time Dopers, yes, this is the same Susan Aude I almost ran over once. ---

There’s a female weather person on channel 6 in Philly who seems to wind the clock of many men. Personally, she’s not my definition of hawt, but to each their own. ---

A more real-world example: the actress [Mary Frann](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Frann), best known as Bob Newhart’s wife-who-wasn’t-Suzanne-Pleshette won a beauty pageant, then got her show biz start as a weather girl in St. Louis. ---

Gee, if you hadn’t asked this question, I might have gone another decade or two without reminiscing about Melody Rogers, the “hot weather girl” on WBBM-TV (CBS) in Chicago in the early 1970’s. Melody had no qualifications except looks, and her hiring was controversial at the time, because people take weather seriously in Chicago, and one critic denounced WBBM for allowing a “curvy girl to giggle the ozone count”. I don’t know about “skimpy clothing”–I imagine she wore short skirts, which were in style at the time, but it’s not as if she came out in a bikini. Melody also did a series of car commercials with Abe Gibron, then the coach of the Chicago Bears. They were painfully, jaw-droppingly awful. ---

Way back in the 1960s, I remember one station in West Texas had a hot blonde weather girl. She did not dress provocatively, but she was a real cutie all right, and a bit on the ditzy side. The news and sports guys used to like to get her giggling. ---

Raquel Welch did the weather for a San Diego TV station before she became a movie star. I have no idea how she dressed, but skimpy clothes or not, they don’t get much hotter than Raquel. ---

Sometimes TWC seems like a sort of Southern pregnancy cult. I swear, half the time you tune in you see some twangy blonde who’s Big As A House. Of course, I think public access spanish channel has more hot actresses per capita than public access US. Even the commercials-- it’s ridiculous. I don’t really watch US soaps, but I know there are a couple of hotties. However, this still doesn’t answer telemundo’s crazy preponderance of them. ---
