What is Bailey’s Crossroads considered to be?

yes, Ottawa in is Ontario. I can’t remember anything from the Confederation Debates whether a federal territory was even considered. After all, Queen Victoria had personally chosen Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada.

My guess is Sir John (who really wanted a unitary state, not a federation, but got out-voted) would have opposed it, as contributing to the idea of the provinces as separate sovereign entities. Just as London happened to be in the county of Middlesex, Ottawa happened to be in the province of Ontario. As well, you have to remember that at the time of Confederation, anything American was viewed by most of our politicians and populace as suspect. (The U.S. looked like it might be torn apart by the Civil War, and so the American precedents looked a bit dicey for long-term stability.)

Now we have the situation where a lot of the federal bureaucracy has spilled over into Hull, Quebec, on the other side of the Ottawa River, so separation would prove interesting…

Mojo: What is Bailey’s Crossroads considered to be?

Bailey’s Crossroads is not an incorporated town; it doesn’t even have any set borders. It is the area of Fairfax County sandwiched between the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church along the Arlington County border.

Canada, at least in the early 70’s had a governemental ZONE that included Hull & Ottawa. This zone had no political powers, so to speak.

Don’t know if it is still there.
