No, you get the steak knives long before you get the toaster. I (black male, 19) say hi to a lot of random people, especially when I’m holding doors open for them. I get about 95% blank/hostile looks, and 5% of the people I say hi to will actually say hi back. People don’t like me to help them carry their groceries to their car either. And people wonder why I’m so damn hostile… ---

I used to work in a bar and noticed this a lot with black men too. They’ll just stroll in off the street, no invite or anything, and then they walk up to you and just start asking for stuff! Being a puny white guy I tended to give it to them, and then they started giving me money. I lost count of the number times I had tell these guys that I didn’t sell drugs. ---

It sounds to me as if **Panache45** is being stalked by black men. It’s obvious they’re after him, and their merciless Campaign of Friendly Greetings will eventually wear him down. Those crazy muthas will have that sumbitch _smilin’_ here pretty quick. Before he knows it, he’ll be _replying_. And _gulp_ God only knows what will happen. Black people smiling is, like, Honky Kryptonite. C’mon. It’s understandable! The guy’s afraid! ---

In all seriousness, the OP was just asking why _only_ Black men said “Hello” to strangers, not pitting them for doing so. I’m not quite sure why this started in the Pit though. I (Black male, 20) generally only address people I know, though I might toss a “Hi” to people if I hold the door for them or something like that. ---
