Why does the highway department put up all those “Deer Crossing” signs ? I doubt they can even read. The deer, I mean; some of the highway crewmen probably can. And even if they could read, why would they cross where any human tells them to ? The answer will remain forever hidden. I wouldn’t trust a human if I were wildlife. I hope this doesn’t get moved to some trivial place at this site. Like ANYWHERE, for instance. I’ll quiet down now. I know some of you are involved in Real Science. ---

Those “Deer Crossing” signs are not there to direct deer. They’re there to warn motorists that deer often cross the highway in that area. ---

If there are requirements that must be met before a traffic device can be installed, those requirements are called the warrants. The warrants for a deer crossing sign appear to vary greatly by state and county. From Washtenaw County, Michigan: “Installation of deer Crossing signs is warranted if five deer car related accidents have occurred in a twelve month period.” You’ll notice that this does not require the deer to cross the road. From the MUTCD (the sacred book of traffic devices and signs): “Non-Vehicular Warning . . . signs (see Figure 2C-11) may be used to alert road users in advance of locations where unexpected \*\*entries into the roadway \*\*might occur or where \*\*shared use of the roadway \*\*by pedestrians, animals, or equestrians might occur.” Bolding mine. ---

In northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland the Sami have domesticated their deer (reindeer) which are their primary means of livelihood. Their well-mannered deer do not cross highways. (The fact that there are no highways is irrelevant.) 😃 ---

You think that the deer warning signs are a waste of money? A bunch of years ago they put a tunnel for deer to cross under an interstate highway. As of a year later, not one deer ever used the tunnel. ---
