Would there be enough light near the surface of said water planet for photovores to develope, or would life on such a planet always be restricted to the kind of critters that grow up around volcanic vents?
I don’t see why there would not be light near the surface, if the planet is near enough to its star to keep the water from freezing solid.
No, I was assuming that life would first evolve around the deep water volcanic vents, and then assmed that it could not migrate upwards towards the surface (a hundred miles deep?) and survive because there was no food [the afore mentioned volcanic heat and chemical source].
But I am now assuming it’s not impossible for photovores to develop, even on a planet with extremely deep oceans.
